So I want a truck rifle.

That Remington pump rifle is cool ...
Don't know what the laws are in your location, but in many jurisdictions it's illegal to have a loaded rifle in a vehicle. So that suggests a magazine-fed rifle of some sort. Think my choice would be an older Remington 760 in .30-06. They are far more plentiful and less expensive than .308s. I'd cut the barrel down to 18 inches or so, shorten the stock a touch, and mount a low power fixed magnification scope on it ... say a 2.5X, 4X max. Buy a couple of spare magazines, and you'd be good to go with a very versatile package in a readily-available cartridge that could be loaded and deployed quickly. A 760 carbine in .308 would be excellent, but they are much more rare, and typically more expensive than .30-06 specimens ... unless already beat up.

If my Marlin 1894c in .357 wasn't so damn pretty I think it would be an excellent truck gun.

Fast little carbine, politically correct to look at and roll your own if you can't buy a load hot enough for your personal tastes.

Since I'm loath to beat it up in my truck I keep it stoked beside the 870 next to the bed.

I would choose the cheapest most reliable and fairy compact, a Saiga in .223. If capacity isnt really an issue you can have the smaller capacity mags and maybe one of the 30 rounders. .223 is readily available and would be a good SHTF caliber to have. Also, if someone broke into your truck and ended up stealing it, you wouldn't be out too much.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.. I reload a lot and all of the bullets for .30 cal are normally .308, so when I mentioned .308 for the mini ruger i was thinking of the bullts caliber not the round..&.62 is a 7.62 or .308.Granted there are differences in Velocities.and individual weights. I was talking of the Ruger mini in(7.62 X 39).
Didn't mean to get some of you all excited, because if indeed they build 7.62 by 54 I'd own one.

Well for a truck gun i guess it depends on what you really need it for. As for personal gotta have it now protection, I always have a pistol on me.

My truck gun rotates between a .22 Marlin 60 or a Stoeger Condor Outback 12 gauge. i tried packing an old MN, but it was just a little too long and too slow to load. The .22 or shottie is a great set up. I can take out most small game with either, and neither raises a lot of eyebrows in southern indiana. Ammo is cheap and easy to find too.

I was looking very hard at some AK's today though;)

Used mini-14 or mini-30 would fit the bill quite nicely. Very ruggad and accurate enough for your distance.

On second thought, if theft is not an issue:
A Lee-Enfield "Jungle Carbine" can be your best friend, as it was for a guy who stopped a charging grizzly with four very quick rounds.
A right-handed guy can cycle rounds very quickly, or so believed many deutsche Soldaten in WW1/2.

For the price of a used Mini 14 or 30 you might find a decent LE #5 for about $400 at a gun show. My latest listed for $350 at the Sept. Memphis show. As handy and about as light as an M-1 Carbine, but a 147-grain lead tipped bullet instead of 110, at the same muzzle velocity.

The LE has the same number of magazine rounds as a typical SKS. Ammo can be reloaded at about .30/round.

Surplus M44 Mosin nagant: $69 at S mart, including ammo ouch, oiler bottle, and cleaning rod.

Easy to replace, not an AK, probably not too useful as a gun if stolen. They also have several built-in functions such as (but not limited to): gun, stabber, screwdriver, mallet, paddle, firewood, spare drive shaft, Mastodon toothpick.

remmington model 7

perfect truck gun 7mm08 model 7 if you get the youth model it's a lot cheaper all you have to do is put a extra slip on recoil pad on and you have the same as adult model. mine works great for truck1

Those of you who think you'll get some kind of consideration or free pass from the police or a "soccer mom" because they see you have a lever action instead of an AK47 have gotten carried away by internet fantasies. You're dreamin'.

Lots of great weapons suggested, but I come from the opinion that my truck rifle should be able to take abuse, should be simple and reliable, and should be able to punch through cover at 100 yards. It should be capable of fast loading, so it may be kept empty till needed. It should be cheap, so it will not be a great loss if stolen or destroyed in a car accident. It should be compact.
Here is my Carcano carbine...a very slick bolt gun (one of the slickest bolts I have used) with six-shot charger loading:

Thats Tractorshaft's Marlin I mentioned earlier in this thread. Thanks for posting it, it is a beauty and in my opinon as good as it gets in a truckgun.
My brother has my Marlin now and I am piling up the parts, sights, scope etc. The local 'smith is cutting my barrel back to 16 1/4.
It's number 3 on my list of things to do when I get back to the States.

I've used a Rossi .44 magnum lever action in this roll for years. But it may soon be replaced by a Marlin 1895 GG in 45/70 I purchased recently. It would be hard to go wrong with a lever action 30/30 though.
