I was in Gander Mountain browsing, saw a few items that warranted interest. One of said items was a Mini-14 Ranch rifle in stainless. Mind you this is the plane Jane rifle, not the new one with the target stock and bull barrel.

I go to thinking I dont have one of these.......(wheels turning) Eyes drift down to the tag.......$799.95:what: the :cuss: over.

I am well aware that Gander is a little on the high side but a $800 Mini? The one next to it has the same price. Surely this fine utility rifle is mis-marked.

I ask the gentleman behind the counter about the price. The result is that it is the correct price. As politely as possible I ask why the sudden price hike from last year ($479) In his best "talking to a 3 year old voice" he explains that shipping guns is now governed by OSHA, and all firearms shipped must be shipped as explosives.(He was the firearms dept manager)

My B.S. meter just reached the red zone.

So can any FFL holders out there confirm or deny this "Gun Shop Rumor"?

p.s. Academy across the street has the same one for $639.00

That was a "proposal" from OSHA, and it was trashed after much response from the public.
 
It's funny but when the Gander opened up near my house the prices didn't seem so bad. But in the past year it seems they have gone to suggested retail pricing on most things. As an example the plain blued model of the Taurus Thunderbolt was $679 the other day, I can get it shipped in from Davidsons for a total of $525.

I've made a couple of decent buys there on used guns, but they would be very low on my list of where to shop new.

And no, the shipping of guns has not changed a bit.

Close, but still wrong. The proposed changes to OSHA regulations dealt only with the handling, storage, and shipment of ammunition, and never suggested that firearms be treated as explosives. But you are right about the proposed changes being "trashed" - at least for the time being. They are currently withdrawn for revision, and will be resubmitted for public comment once revised... so don't breathe a sigh of relief just yet.
 
it's gander mountain.... that's why it's so high. No offense to anyone who bought a firearm from gander mountain....

Seriously, shop around! Your local guy is going to be cheaper, and you'll be keeping the money closer to home, where it matters the most....rather than paying all those extra OSHA governed shipping costs for explosives that gander mountain has to pay for.

I don't buy anything from gander mountain. I did, at one time, buy some primers there because I wanted to reload that night and just happened to be in the store looking at fishing lures...which, also are ridiculously marked up.
 
A firearm is about as explosive as an empty gas can. That is to say, neither are explosive.

I never "got" the mini-14. I just don't understand why you'd pay that much for a gun like that. Yeah, $800 is AR territory.
 
strat, in the early '70s Bill Ruger issued an edict forbidding the Mini-14 to the general peasantry, only LEOs could have his Mini. This immediately boosted the unobtainium factor of the Mini which pushed into Iwannacoolgun virus. If no one could get it, then having it made the possessor special.

After the weapon bombed overseas (very few picked it up, e.g. RUC), Bill relabled it a "plinker" and harmless (instead of a militree weapon of death) and marketed it to the general public. Decades later the Mini is still reaping the rewards of this marketing brilliance.
 
I went to Gander once or twice. $245 dollar K31's that didn't come with magazine. Don't get me wrong, they have some good deals on certain things, but on the used guns I'm a fan of I haven't been impressed
 
I went there a couple of weeks ago, they had a used Savage Mk2 for $164. You can go a mile up the road to Wal-mart and get a new one every day of the week for $115.

Ditto to that. Just like a gun show, being ignorant of what reasonable prices are will be expensive at Gander Mountain. I've found that if I poke around what they have, I can find a good price here and there. That, along with the pretty wide selection of reloading supplies and gun stuff, is enough to get me to go there a couple times a year.
 
OK, I'm an FFL. BS:banghead:. Anyone that ignorant or deceitful does not deserve your business regardless of price. Shipping is usually the place where extra profit is made to offset, in some cases, a seemingly low price.
