Speed Six?

I've been looking for a Model 10, but I found a good deal on a Speed Six. How much are they worth, how do they compare, how are they for a good wheel gun?

Speed Sixes are about as good as they come for a solid revolver that is not too big. Depending on whether it is Stainless or blued, 2 3/4 or 4" barrel it will be worth anywhere from 350-500.

Stainless and 2 3/4 barrel being the higher priced ones.

It would make an adequate substitute for the Model 10 though Model 10s tend to be a little less costly.

Same frame and innards as the venerable Security Six only with round butt. Solid, bank vault type guns. Tougher than model 10s but I won't put down a tight 10 either.

I have several Security Sixes and one SP101. Won't part with any of them.

The Speed Six is a good solid revolver. They are like the old Timex commercial, take a licking and keep on ticking.

I'd jump on the six if it is in decent shape and it appeals to you, just because they don't appear on the market as often as 10s (at least around here). I also think that the six-series is about as elegant a revolver as Ruger ever produced, so the time to acquire one is when they present themselves.

I paid $365 for an as-new condition blued 6"bbl Ruger Security Six half-lug .357 on consignment at a local Pawn Shop a few months ago. Came with the original red and black cardboard box, original manual, even the inner-bag and even the plastic ring for the cylinder face. It appears to be late-Seventies manufacture. I think this was a better-than-average deal.

I'm looking at a 4" barrel model, blue, but fairly worn, they said it wasn't very well taken care of, but a tech has looked it over and replaced the sights. I'm also looking at a model 10-5 for about the same price, similar condition.

My trio includes an early six inch which needed a new hammer spring...same as 10-22, no problem. Next came a 2 3/4" which has taken two deer (not on purpose...just what I had on hand when the legal opportunity presented itself), last is a 4" stainless with the 200 year rollmark...it is my favorite and goes with me to the farm every trip.

Stronger than K frames, just not quite as smooth in the action. Nothing beats a tuned K, at least an old one.

Speed Six is good as any.

Those two are both mine, the Speed Six and Smith 64. Both have actions jobs I've done (and the 64 a bobed hammer.) Both will do. But the Speed Six is definatly sturdier.

I'd get the Speed Six because you don't see those as often. I have a Security Six that I like a lot, they are solid, good looking, and mine has a good double action trigger pull.

Even if it had the 2 3/4 barrel I would still only pay 250 or less.

A Ruger Speed Six will outlast any Colt (Python, Police Positive, Trooper, Trooper MK III) or S&W revolver. They're tough. Period. However, where's the front sight? If it was $250, I'd buy it. That's a good price.

As I said earlier, they're replacing the sights.

Buy it! I paid $272 for my Security Six back in 1976/77. Your $250 is a lot less, especially in modern money, than what I paid back then.

I guess it depends what caliber speed six you are speaking of?The 9mm models go for more $$ than the other cals.I have a stainless 9mm speed six,great psitol.

Well, 4" Speed Sixes are rarer than the 2-3/4" versions!

I dont ever give much advice. But when it comes to a great carry weapon, the Speed Six is the Royals Royce of the ccw carry weapons in revolvers. I own a SS in 2 3/4 in barrel. i bought it in 2002. It was almost 100% new. I got it for a song. $245.00 It was born in 1982. I carry it 90% of the time for my ccw. It will shoot anything, and shoot through anyone. I feel safe and secure packing this weapon. It will do its part if I do mine. 6 rounds of Remington 357M1 will get the job done.

Biggest difference between ruger and smith is the trigger / action. Better on a smith, then again the ruger will last longer, so it is a toss up.

I took a chance yesterday and pulled the trigger on one from this very batch (the guy had three left - they still had front sites). The price seemed right and I was looking for a good 'project' gun for refinishing.

After reading a story of a speed six that had been horribly abused,but still shot well, I decided to roll the dice. Should be in this week. I'll report on what I get.
