Haven't posted alot here but I just saw the comparison chart for pistols and saw the S/A XD listed as DAO. I've also seen it listed as DA from Buds and others. I may be missing something But the XDSC I own can't be fired without the striker in the cocked position. To my mind that makes the Pistol a single action only firearm. There is no decocker on this gun, you have to have a round in the chamber and it must be cocked to be fired. So how can this be anything but a SAO gun?

Not trying to start a argument I might be missing some fine point about the DA, SA definition. Am I wrong?

Life was a simpler time before Glock screwed up the definitions of SAO and DAO.
A Glock may by definition be a DAO, But it shoots exactly like a SAO.
As far as you and im concerned a Glock and XD act the same way when firing, But internally different things you cant see are happening.
OOH YEAHH!!!

Glock falls in the DA classification, because the striker is only partially cocked. pulling the trigger fully cocks the striker, then releases the striker.

the XD is a SA because the striker is already cocked and pulling the trigger trips the sear, releasing the striker.

The degree of pre-cocking of the striker makes the DA v SA designation sort of slippery.

An XD is almost entirely cocked by the reciprocating action of the slide, my PPS slightly less so, and I don't know where a Glock fits in as far as pre-cock persentage goes.

Now, if you're talking about the trigger's actions, all most striker-fired triggers CAN do is pull the striker to full cock and then release it, although Taurus has a moving sear gadget that will allow a "second strike" much like a DA/SA gun's ability to just drop the hammer again with another trigger pull. So no, the trigger cannot cock the gun from a "decocked" condition the way a P.38 or most hammer-fired DA/SA guns can.

So the XD, as far as trigger action, would be SA only, and so would a Glock's, just with a different amount of cocking action.

This all makes sense when you actually poke around inside, for now just figure out what you want by doing some dry-firing in the shop (take a snap-cap if they're chicken about dryfire) or, even better, hitting a rental range or a pile of friends' guns.

S&W M&Ps are listed as DAO by the factory but they're no different than the XDs. IMO, both are single action striker fired guns although there is a very slight camming back of the striker because the sear travels through an arc as it releases.
