Squirrel Hunting

In addition to all the other things already mentioned, I'm a firm believer that squirrel hunting is pretty much the best way in the world to teach kids about hunting.
- If you do it right and pick a good area, there's usually enough going on that the kid won't get bored.
- Squirrels eat the same things as deer (if there isn't a farm or an orchard nearby, anyway) so if you're in an area with a lot of squirrels, there's probably a lot of deer sign there to show the kid as well.
- It's less dangerous, because there are a lot fewer people in the woods than there are during deer season in most places.
- There's a lot less pressure involved - nobody ever gets "squirrel fever", after all.
- The success rate is high, so kids don't get as frustrated as they might during deer season.
- Many of the skills and knowledge you learn from squirrel hunting directly applies to both archery and rifle hunting for larger game.

Of course, the best thing of all about squirrel hunting is that afterwards you can mortify your wife by tying a couple of squirrel tails to your car's antenna. :)
