I don’t know rifles very well- can someone here recommend a US made, stainless construction, detachable magazine .223 bolt action rifle to me? Short and light is desirable- looking for something like a Ruger GSR, but in .223. Price around $1000.

Thanks.

I was surprised to see it took to the 6th post to see Savage. That's the first one I thought of. I wonder if Mossberg makes one? I've heard good things about their bottom shelf cheap rifles.

The Savage is the only recomedation that is offered in stainless, under $1,000 and is also USA made.

I'd forget the detachable mag, it opens up a lot more options. Ruger, Winchester, and Remington all offer quality USA made stainless rifles well under $1,000 that will serve you well

I didn't know anything browning stamped their name on was made in the us. I thought it was FN or miroku or whoever. I guess I'm behind the times.

Savage guns are great. Only bad thing about them is that they're not very sexy. they sure can shoot though.

legacy sports howa makes a ss varmint action you can order with detachable mags.midwayusa.com

He said USA made. Howa's are made in Japan.

I'm not a fan of Savage, but it is the only rifle that meets all of his requirements.

Thompson Center is US made.

You should be able to find the venture in .223 and "weather-shield", like stainless only more corrosion resistant.

I'd recommend the Icon, but it doesn't come in .223, .243 or .22-250 are the small caliber choices.

Savage is either US or Canada.

The Savage model 16 "Weather Warrior" should do it for you.

I haven't shot that particular model, but you could check in with somebody who has I'm sure.

A new Browning is not US made.

Any particular reason that you want stainless and not blued?

Any particular reason for .223 instead of .308?

Based on your description and pointing to the GSR, you're looking for a scout rifle in .223. If you decide to jump to .308, the Savage 10 FCM Scout might fit the bill as well as the Ruger GSR. It's a nice pointable and accurate shooter in that price range.

I'll be interested to hear what you find.

Good Hunting.

The T/C Venture looks very interesting, thank you for the pointer.

I hate firearms maintenance and oily guns, hence the stainless steel requirement. The .223 spec is because I already have a modest stash of .223 ammo.

You’re right on with the Scout rifle observation. I like the GSR, but the stainless version doesn’t seem to be readily available, and I don’t want the carbon steel version.
