Looking at an STI Trojan 5". I have had the 1911 bug since I sold my last one. Question: what is the finish on this gun? It doesn't appear to be blued, but more likely seems "painted" with one of the many finishes on the market. Does anybody know what it is?

Also, the age old debate, how do you feel about the frame being cast? If I was ever to get it refinished down the road, would NP3 look good on a cast frame, or would I need a "paint" type finish?

I dont know whether its phosphate/phosphorous black or parkerizing but its not very tough. My trojan was in the same boat as yours....just not a pretty gun for 1K$ after a while.
Its not paint I know that.....it is an actual gun finish. As far as the frame being cast/forged...I wouldnt worry about it..the odds of you breaking it are almost NOT! Finish like HC/NP3 really doesnt have anything to do with how the frame is made. They all look/wear well with the proper coating..........
Good luck.....and shoot well.

....

Maybe I should have posted after I was a little more awake!!

To be more clear, a blued gun is usually very classy because you can see the grain of the metal if you look close. The frame being cast, I was simply curious as to whether or not you could get a good aftermarket finish to look as good on a cast frame as opposed to a forged frame.

The other question being the cast frame and its durability, longevity etc. And thank you for the answer. I didn't figure it to be a big deal because heck, Rugers are cast and they are TANKS!!

My intention is to keep this gun ( NO REALLY!! I will not sell any more of my guns!!) so I am willing to get another finish in a couple of years when this one gets to looking to beat up.

Update

Went ahead and bought a used Trojan .45 5.0 and am having feeding issues with it. Spoke with STI today concerning several things, one being the feeding problem, the other being the the finish.

The feeding problem is being handled under warranty EVEN THOUGH THE GUN IS USED!!!! Outstanding customer performance is all I can say!

Second, the finish is in fact blued. STI changes their chemical tanks often enough that the bluing remains incredibly dark on every gun!
