Metro police are looking for a 15-year-old boy who allegedly carried a gun on an MTA bus this morning.
According to a Metro spokeswoman, a woman waiting on a bus at Fourth and Deadrick streets at 7:30 a.m noticed two teenage boys also waiting on a bus. One of the boys appeared to have a long object stuck down his pants leg.
The woman notified an official, who contacted Metro police. When the boys realized that they had provoked suspicion, they boarded bus No. 23. When Metro offices and MTA security boarded that bus, they found one of the boys, a 16-year-old, sitting in a bus seat. Wedged under a seat next to him was a .22-caliber semi-automatic rifle, police said.
He was taken into custody and told police that the gun belonged to the other boy, 15-year-old Benjamin Mitchell of Meharry Boulevard.
Mitchell is described as an African-American, 5 feet, 8 inches tall with white braids in his hair. He is a student at Jere Baxter Alternative School. He showed up at the school later in the morning, but fled when police arrived looking for him.
According to police, Mitchell was involved in an argument with a Pearl-Cohn High School student Tuesday evening off of school property. The Pearl-Cohn student has been interviewed by police.
