Since my Mak is no longer my main carry piece, I'm toying with the idea of getting a threaded barrel and jumping through the NFA hoops to put a can on it.

Anyone here done it? I've seen several suppressed Maks, but all where .380 ... any reason there aren't any 9x18 ones?

Where would one go to find the suppressor?

I figure finding the suppressor will be the hard part, but I should be able to do the whole thing for under a grand. (barrel is $50 at makarov.com, barrel press is only $35, tax is $200 ... I imagine a can will run between $200 and $700).

Will a regular 9x19 can work? What about a .380 can?

The 9mm and .380 both are .355.
The 9mm suppressor hole may not be big enough for the .364 Mak bullet.

Off the top of my head, I don't know... but is most 9x18 ammo subsonic?

I think you always want to try to keep a supressed ammo subsonic, right?

The problem is that suppressors can't be imported and there's no domestic market for a 9x18/Mak suppressor. 9x19 cans don't work because the diameter of 9x18Mag is larger.

If you can match the barrel threading, you could use a .40 suppressor. You will lose a little effectiveness, but probably not much.

Check out these sights. I think Advanced Armament has the closest to what you are looking for. The reason why most suppressed Mak shooters use .380 is because it is safely subsonic. 9X18 is only marginally so. On cold mornings the round may go supersonic. This is VERY loud.

Personally I think a 9mm suppressor would work fine with 9X18 (assuming it stayed subsonic). If I had absolutely perfect alignment I could fire .25 autos out of my Gemtech Voartex II. The slug fits through the last baffle.

Ask around, maybe try one out. If you have to you could use the .380 barrel. Since the Mak barrel is fixed you wont need any recoil enhancing device fro proper cycling. Also remember there are wet and dry suppressors. I prefer dry ones (you can always add a coolant for even more suppression). What ever coolant you put in a wet suppressor will definitely spray back on you. Having said that wet suppressors are considerably smaller, so a little back spray might be worth it.

I have $530 invested in my Vortex II + fingerprinting fees + passport photos + $200 to the ATF + another $500 for various threaded barrels. And you know what? It was worth every penny. I’m glad my mom talked me into it.

Let me know if you have any questions.
