Suppressor Question

This may have been ask before. I really have only researched a couple weeks on suppressors, so it may not even sound like an intelligent question.

I am looking at getting a .22LR suppressor for my Walther P22. So far, I like the Tactical Innovation and Gem tech suppressors. I also have a Savage .17 HMR rifle that I would like the suppressor to work with. I read on the Tactical Innovation web site that although their .22LR might work with the .17HMR it is not rated for it and they do not recommend it. Obviously that is straight from the horses mouth so to speak but I have seen and talked to people at the range that use their .22LR suppressor for a .17HMR. My question is, does anyone use a .22LR suppressor for a .17HMR rifle or have experience with doing this? Does anyone know a suppressor that is rated and will work with both my platforms?

Well, I cant comment much regaring the 22 suppressor on a 17, but I have a 308 suppressor on my 223; the principle is the same.

I have both a 223 and 308 suppressor and have used them back to back on 223 caliber rifles. I notice no noticible difference between the two as far as noise reduction, real world. Now Im sure empiricle evidence will support that one is actually more efficient than the other, but you cant tell side by side.

YHM advised me that what gas escapes around the bullet in a larger suppressor, is negated by the phyiscal size of the suppressor. The larger bodied (and volume) of the 308 suppressor makes up for the loss when using a 223 caliber.

Larger suppressors are popular, as it allows you to use one suppressor (and pay one tax stamp at $200.00) on multiple guns. So Im sure youll be fine. The only recommendation I would make is use the largest volume 22 suppressor you can find. In fact, perhaps using a 223 suppressor would be best. However make certain that the suppressor is able to be disassembled for cleaning as 22lr's in cans tend to gum up the internal baffles quite quickly from my experience.

I've got a Tactical Solutions Cascade Ti that is FA rated for both those calibers (and .22 mag). The SWR Spectre also meets those ratings.

joe, i don't think it's quite the same as many 22lr suppressors are aluminum, and putting a 223rem suppressor on a walther p22 is a pretty non-standard suggestion. the can would weigh more than the pistol

some of my friends use a stainless YHM Mite 22 can on SBR'd PS90s shooting 5.7x28. Not sure how close that is, but it seems to be ok so far.

i use a YHM mite stainless can on a P22 and it is a fantastic can for the money

Thanks everybody for your input. I ordered my suppressor. One other question, what type of .22LR do you feed through your suppressor that makes it the the most quite? Is there a huge difference between supersonic and subsonic ammunition?

depends on the gun. for p22, the barrel is so short that walmart federal bulk pack standard velocity ammo doesn't get up to super-sonic velocity and so sounds like subsonic. it's very quiet.

All I shoot through my cans are CCI subsonic or standard velocity. The subsonic are HP rated at 1050 fps, the standards are lead round nose at 1070 fps. Some hosts don't like to feed the HP's since they have a lead band that makes them more difficult to chamber. Having a barrel length of 4" or less will keep most rounds subsonic, regardless of the ammo.

That's true, but my friend has a suppressed P22, and there is an audible difference between subsonic lead rounds and regular supersonic rounds. I didn't get the brands of either, but they do sound different. Still, it's a suppressed .22. It's quiet regardless of what you feed it.
