I just bought a Lee Pro 1000 set up for .38 special and would like to be able to load .45 acp and .40sw. Besides the dies, what other parts for the loader will I need?
An additional question: Do I need a crimper?
Thank you

You have options.

Almost certainly, you will want a separate turret disk for each caliber.

You could buy an entire carrier (primer feed, shell plate, carrier body) and swap the whole assembly. A little more expensive, but many prefer it to the alternative, partial disassembly of the carrier and swapping parts.

How often will you want to swap?

Some people go so far as to simply keep separate presses for each caliber.

I have read where folks have a separate press for each caliber, but that seems a bit extreme. I was thinking along the lines of 500 to 1000 then switch. Then a few 100 or so then switch. I have several 1000 .40 but only 100's of the .38 and .45, but that is growing as I have only had them a few weeks and I've had the.40's for several years. If I had part numbers for doing it on the cheap and#'s for doing it quickly then I could weigh the cost v/s the time and make decision.

I bought one set up for 9mm. I then went out and bought a 10 mm and so I needed to reload for that. The carrier for the 9 and the 10 mm are the same except for the primer press. So to change that part out it takes me maybe 5 min. I have a 2nd turret to hold my dies so I do not have to readjust them, so remove that, loosen the carrier from the ram. take off the 3 bolts on top, remove carrier ( at this point if you had a 2nd carrier just put that one in and reverse what I said so maybe a 2 min conversion. ) Once carrier is removed take out the 2 screws on bottom of the carrier take out the rod, take out clip that allows for the primer to feed when a case is there, remove eject pin, loosen shell plate (reverse threaded by the way) take out primer shoot, take out small primer press and reverse what I just typed to put it all back together.

Now my first time took me about 30 min but now 5 to 10 max.

Watch cowboy T aka San Francisco liberal with a gun on youtube. The guy is goofy but he does a great job explaining the pro 1000. I learned 95% of the press from this guy.

Also the best place to get components for the pro 1000 is https://fsreloading.com/ it is cheaper than the lee site.

No crimper needed.

The Pro-1000 is completely modular.

38 Special takes Shellplate #1, the small primer punch and chute, the large case feeder, small case feed slider and straight "Z"-bar.

9mm Luger takes Shellplate #19, the small primer punch and chute, the small case feeder, small case feed slider, and straight "Z"-bar.

40 S&W takes Shellplate #19, the small primer punch and chute, the large case feeder, small case feed slider and bent "Z"-bar.

45 Auto takes Shellplate #2, the large primer punch and chute, the large casefeeder, large case feed slider and bent "Z"-bar.

To convert your press to load 40 S&W and 45 Auto you will need to buy:
#2 Shellholder
#19 Shellholder
Large Case Feed Kit
Large Primer punch and slide chute
Bent "Z"-bar
Dies of the caliber required

I personally would advise buying a die turret for each caliber to make changeover quick and simple so you don't need to adjust your dies any time you change calibers.

I would also advise that instead of buying just the primer parts you need, that you buy the Primer Parts Kit #90660 in a red translucent box which has a complete set of primer parts for large and small primer applications plus another primer tray. What you are going to load has a lot of small primer and the chutes can get damaged and the whole parts kit costs about what buying just the parts you need already costs.

When I had only one shellplate carrier, a conversion took me about 10 minutes or so to get it changed over and then re-adjust the shellplate timing, change and check the powder disk, and be ready to load.
I wound up buying complete shellplate carrier assemblies for each major caliber along with case feeder parts I leave ready to switch. I also got extra Auto_Disk powder measures that I leave already mounted on the die turret for that caliber. All I have to do is drop in the carrier and die turret, add powder and primers, run a few dummies to check powder drop and OAL and crimp, and away I go.

Price out all of those items... you may well find that it's not much less than buying a second press. Also take into account the headache of conversion every time.
