Taking off an AR handguard?

Is there some trick to taking off the handguards that I'm just not getting? I'm pushing down on the ring at the base, but the handguards themselves won't BUDGE to come off. Is there something else that I'm missing?

Push down on the ring, pull handguard up and out. I can do this very easily on my XM15, but there is a tool sold just for this purpose. Personally I never had a problem.

The ring needs to be ALL the way down. Takes a decent amount of strength, at least on my Bushie. Make sure you do it on a hard, flat surface with no "give".

For me, it always takes either another person helping or a removal tool. I'm just not strong enough to push the ring down and get the handguards off.

DUH *smacks self in head*! I was trying to push them down and then out when all i had to do was pull outward and it came right off. Thanks for the help guys. I get the dummy of the day award. :banghead:

Homemade handguard removal tool - easy to make and well worth the effort.

for *REALLY* stubborn handguards, wedge two flathead screwdrivers in the handguards to pry them out, then use both your hands to push the delta ring down. Thankfully, handguards get easier to remove as excess material comes off.

No, it's doable w/o the tool, but come on work smarter not harder. Unless you gotta chick you're trying to impress, then I recommed doing three sets of 15 rep foregrips removals, morning and night.

People used to type on typewriters too....if a simple tool makes a difficult job (that nobody LIKES to do) easy and quick...I say use it.

The older AR15s up thru the A1 config have a straight Delta ring. At least the newer ones have the tapered shape to give you a purchase.

Ditto on asking a drill sgt for a tool to remove handguards.

8 years of packing one for Uncle Sam, I never needed, wanted or knew about a tool. Ditto, my old DS would have flipped. When I was an armorer, I would died from hysteria if a Pvt asked me for one
