Wanting a new truck gun I am thinking about either using my Ruger GP 100 chamber in 357, but I am also looking at the tAURUS Judge chamber in 410/45 LC. I am thinking that the Taurus Judge using a 410 Slug rotating with some 410 scatter shot would be pretty impressive for self defense. Does anyone one a Taurus Judge that they can comment on?

Which do you think would be a better leave in the truck gun??????
 
.357 without a doubt. The Taurus is pretty much just a novelty. I've shot one and while it's fun, there are much better choices for a serious gun.
 
why slugs it's chambered for .45 colt.of course I'd still take a sweet handling 4" .357 anyday.Switch it to a tracker in 45 colt or 44 mag then I'd have to ponder.oh wait no I don't I can take both my S&W 65 and my Tauri 431:neener:
 
.410 out of the short, rifled barrel of a Taurus Judge is ineffectual and there's no reason to have a .45LC gun with so much extra metal on it. I'd get a .45LC or a .357 over the Judge anyday.
 
.357. period. All the power you could want, and in a package that I'd trust to be more reliable when subjected to abuse.
besides, and I have no data to back this up, but i don't know that out of that short barrel, the .410 ga buckshot would pick up enough velocity to really be as effective.
 
.410 slugs are pretty much only available in 1/5 and 1/4 ounce weights. 437.5/5 = 87.5 gr. 437.5/4 = 109.4 gr.

You can do much better than 88 gr and 110 gr bullets, in .357 magnum.
 
Nothing can make a bad guy back down like a monster that he has already met in the past. This Taurus is a fad gun. I regard it as something that will be bought up by those who want to be able to say that they own and dazzle their buddies, but a good old fashioned .357 is a familiar beast. It's a workhorse. When all is said and done, go with a well-proven creature that can do the job.

I think most of you didn't truly read the question. It wasn't "which would you rather have" but "which would you leave in the truck" gun. Personally, I'd rather leave a gun in the truck I don't hold so near and dear to my heart as a 357mag. Someone breaks into your truck and steals your 357, it's like "oh crap!" but someone steals your tauri judge it's like "oh well". I also wouldn't use slugs, or in this case "slogs" as a short distance truck-defence ammo.
 
the GP100 is the better choice for 2 legged critters.
The 410 probably doesn't develop much velocity in the short barrel, and the very long freebore, and shallow rifling probably leave a lot to be desired with 45colt. It attempts to re-solve a problem that 357 snake shells solved a long time ago.
 
I'd rather have the taurus, but I would NOT load it with slogs. 45LC for large animals and birdshot for small game.

Why? I go offroading at times. That can mean mechanical failures and potentially hiking in out of the way places. Having a handgun that can be used to take running rabbits seems like a very good survival-positive idea. At the same time a hot 45LC can deliver a lot more muzzle energy than a .357 -- twice the energy. Seems like a good combo.

That said, I've never shot one and the implementation details would make a difference.

You'll take a lot more small game with an accurate .357 shooting wadcutters than you will with that Judge, if you can shoot good enough. If you can get in range of a rabbit with that Taurus, just step on it and cut its throat and save your ammo.:rolleyes: I'll take .357 180 grain buffalo bore at nearly 800 ft lbs to a .45 Colt 255 grainer at 450 ft lbs, too, any day of the week. The .357 has nearly twice the energy of anything the Judge is capable of shooting safely and will be more accurate, no doubt. Don't waste your money, you'll be very disappointed, especially after that thing frags on you when you try shooting +P .45 in it.
 
I've heard mixed reports on the judge's patterning. Some people report decent patterns to 15 feet, others to 20 yards. I don't know if the difference is expectation, type of shot, or just BS. Someone who claimed the pattern was good only to 15 feet was using #4. Someone who said he was using it for rabbits out to 30 yards was saying 7-1/2. Maybe they were just being irresponsible. I have never even seen one in person.

As for car gun use... if we're talking defensive use the MOST common car gun use is someone standing by window with a pistol. Second most common use is someone in the passenger or back seat. In each case the range is close to 3 feet and the judge with #4 (again, not slogs) would do quite nicely and would minimize the chance of harm to bystanders. You could do a LOT worse.

I have a long gun around when offroading. A .22 out of a rifle is far better for small game than .357mag out of a revolver. The judge sounds like a fun addition to that but I'd have to see what it can actually do.

That one is not to be believed. I have a .410/.45 colt barrel for my contender that has a full choke that also stops the rotation of the shot. It's good to about 20 yards, but no farther and it's a 10" gun. the Judge is not much past 15 feet, great for in home defense, but no rabbit gun. Some guy actually got on here and said something about DUCK hunting with one. :rolleyes: I don't know if he was joking or serious, but get real...LOL! Even in a long gun the .410 is a worthless bore for ducks now that steel shot is manditory.

For a "survival gun", I have the TC, of course, but would prefer my 20 gauge coach gun with appropriate chokes installed. I can shoot cylinder bore in the left (rear trigger) barrel for slugs and the IC or mod or full in the right (front trigger) for small game or I can go IC/full which is the choice I make for dove hunting. This thing is as effective dove hunting as my 12s. I killed a couple of limits with it opening weekend. It patterns REALLY well and is accurate with foster slugs out to 50 yards. Barrel regulation overlaps a bit much past that, but hey, at 50 a deer would be dead. Being a 20", too, I can actually take it apart and wrap it up in a rag and stash it either in my motorcycle's bags or in my back pack. My off roading is done on a dirt bike, btw. :D I'm not really THAT into the off road thing, though, mostly use it to haul corn to my feeder and drag out deer and hogs I've shot.

Oh, I also have an AR7 that's reliable, believe it or not, and pretty accurate. It's scoped and in a marlin papoose floating case. Handy little take down designed for survival. I still prefer my 20 gauge, though.
 
I don't know of a good use for the .410 pistol, maybe if you lived in an area with tons of snakes, or maybe a survival gun. Other than the the cool factor I don't see much use for it.
 
I've read reviews and watched a few vids of the Judge. This gun was made for for close quarter defense situ's such as cleaning hallways, living rooms, carjackers, etc. It most likely isn't any good past about 10 feet and it certainly isn't a tackdriver in 45LC. But I gotta think that it would be devestating both phyisically and psycologically to get hit with that shot close range. Remember that the goal is not to kill the perp, but to stop his aggression. I can't imagine any but the most drug crazed zombie continuing a threat after such a blast.

If I could have one in CA, I would.
 
I have a Judge and I use it for a snake gun around the house, I would not trust it in a SD situation at any distances, face it the 410 is weak and th 45lc is more of a "cowboy" load. Why not get a GOOD lockbox for your Ruger and buy extra ammo with what you were going to spend on the Judge?
