I had assumed that CCW in indiana would be 21... that seems to be the national norm. also, that's the age required to purchase a handgun. However, in order to carry any loaded, non-secured firearm in your vehicle, you need a CCW permit.

I sent an E-mail to the local PD because the law itself seemed to be unclear on the matter. imagine my suprise at the response:

CCW permits can be issued at 18, but handguns can't be purchased until 21.

very odd.

I wonder if handguns can be transferred or borrowed from an older relative? guess I'll give it a few days and then e-mail back.

Federal law prohibits the sale of hanguns and "handgun ammunition" via a FFL dealer to anyone under 21. Private sales of handguns to those 18 and over are legal unless otherwise prohibited by state law.

Yeah, its actually "more legal" for a 19 year old to purchase a gun off a stranger on the street than from an actual gun shop. Its not a bad deal really, just try to buy from someone trust worthy (off a board like this isnt a bad start), its nice to have at least one "paperless" pistol anyhow.

When you are 19, the bigger problem is finding someone selling the gun you want, than actually getting it.

I'll be happy the day I can go to the gun store and put in an order for that CZ75 in single action with the finish that no one else likes, rather than searching all over for it.

Odd? Nah, just the interaction of federal law and Indiana law.

The Safe Streets Act of 1968, which abolished crime in America, mandates a minimum age of 21 to purchase a handgun from a federally licensed dealer. There is no federal law as to carrying a handgun (while not on federal property), thus state law controls. Even though federal law is supreme, federal law is silent.

Indiana mandates a minimum age of 18 to carry off your property or bidness. Thus, you can get your little pink card at 18.

How can you make it to 18 in Indiana and not have your dad buy you at least several pistols?:D

easy; While Dad was ROTC and forest service, Mom doesn't like guns in her home. (although she opposes gun control)

Also, while I was born here, I spent 8 of my first 9 years outside of Indiana.

Similar laws in ND. CCW and legal possession at 18 cohabitating with fed laws that require proof of age 21 to purchase from an FFL. I got my CCW at 19, my first handgun was a gift after getting back from a deployment. My second I purchased at a gunshow from a private seller.

Still a tough order - he'll have to find a face to face deal in his area since shipping requires going through an FFL.

Does anyone know or know where I can find the law in Arkansas. If legal to have but not buy at 18 then I am going to give my Niece a handgun for Christmas.

start with packing.org

they should have a link to the relevant law pages that Arizona maintains, if Arizona has such a webpage. Indiana maintains one.

after you have a basic understanding of the law, and the specific points you need answers on...

then find your local PD's webpage and send them an e-mail asking for clarification

Definantly, I'm in that boat right now. I let a deal on a Karh get away, and a dan wesson 1911. :cuss:

This is a bit of a legal oddity isn't it? We have a similar conundrum in Illinois...

From the Illinois State Police FAQ...

I am under the age of 21, can I apply for a FOID card?
Yes. In addition to all other requirements, a person who is under 21 years of age must have the written consent of his or her parent or legal guardian to possess and acquire firearms and firearm ammunition. Also, he or she must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor other than a traffic offense or adjudged delinquent. The parent or legal guardian providing written consent must be eligible to possess a valid FOID card.

What we really need in Illinois is some kid who is 18 years old and whose parents don't want to give them permission (or whose parents can't legally possess a FOID) to apply for a FOID to file a lawsuit challenging the age requirement on Constitutional grounds.
