First I must say that the kindness and generousity of my fellow gun owners never fails to impress me. I have always marveled at those shooters who sport the cannon that is the S&W 500. Two days ago at my local range a great guy, Tony, brought his 500 and DE .50 with him to shoot. before he could even finish unpacking his guns the range had cleared out.. appearantly no one there besides myself enjoys being around that big of a weapon... I just got a big smile. Needless to say Tony let me fire off 5 rounds out of the 500.....I WANT ONE... it will take me a month to save up the money, but I can think of nothing else... Thanks Tony!

While at the range recently a fellow member was there with a 500 and all I can say is the safest place to be when it goes off is to be behind it,FAR behind it. Haven't felt muzzle blast like that since being near a shooter with a 50BMG bolt action.

I got my M500 4". Another thing to get is 20 rounds of 700gr ammo for it. I did just because. Looking for someone to shoot it however.

I am a 500 Mag nut, I have been shooting the 500 Mag, from the first day I could get my hands on one. Magnum Research beat S&W to the punch, and had there 500 Mag on the Market. So I bought one almost 6 years ago, I also have a 4 inch 500 Mag. I have over 5000 rounds of 500 Mags fired in all my 500 Mags I have owned.

As for the 700 gr. loads, I have fired them from my 4 inch 500 Mag. Are they a handful, yes, but I was able to hit my target with 5 quick shots at 25 yards and maintain a 3 inch group. They are not accurate after 25 yards, they tend to be unstable after 25 yards.

The best load for the S&W 500 Mag is the 350 to 440 gr. loads. That is where the 500 mag shines. Anything hit with a 440 gr. bullet from the S&W 500 Mag will die. Again shot placement is key. The advice I can give any 500 mag owner is, shoot and practice a lot and get very proficient with it. Range and trigger time is the only way to master the 500 mag.

Have a S&W 500 myself and think it's a great gun. Wouldn't consider it a CCW weapon but with the 4 inch barrel it makes a nice Alaska trip gun.
