The dangers of pig hunting with just a knife

While scooting around the 'net trying to get my fix during one of THR's recent outages I found a NZ based hunting and fishing forum (a silver lining from this particular cloud). On this forum are some mad keen pighunters and here in NZ most pighunting is done with dogs and knives ... no guns. Now I know that a lot of US hunters are a little sceptical of these pighunting methods, so I thought I'd link in a story or two for your entertainment and edification.

While its true that the pig often ends up dead (and there are some large and nasty looking pigs roaming about in the wilds of NZ) sometimes the pig gets in a few good shots first.

Just thought y'all might be interested in seeing the photos and story of one pig hunting trip where the author took his 8 year old daughter out with him.

I'm down in Mobile, there is plenty of land down here around the Tensaw Delta and down near Bayou LaBatre. There are too many snakes on the bayou right now though, and my dogs think they are tasty slimjims.

It is one of my dreams to hunt pigs with primitive weapons - specifically knives and/or spears, using dogs. Looks like quite a rush.

Of course, I might try it with a bayoneted rifle first. Just in case I run into a big 'un.

If you want to hunt hogs on private land:

1. Inquire at a local feed store, see if anyone is having pig trouble and will let you hunt. If not, post a notice on their board, sooner or later someone will have pig trouble.

2. Drive around field crop land find land with big fields adjacent to hollows, rivers or washes. Inquire with local farmer about pig trouble. Peanut farmers down here will shake your hand and tell you to give em hell.

Once you get the OK, keep the dogs out of fields, and make sure to offer meat to the farmer who let you hunt. Then you are set for life, less feral hogs means more deer so exterminate those buggers.

Back in the early days of TFL, one of the moderators, Rob Pincus (now with the Valhalla training center in Colorado) went on a Texas hog hunt, using a knife. IIRC, he killed on in the 150-pound range. I imagine some of the pictures are around, in the Hunt forum there.

My favorite knife for hog hunting is the bayonet on the front end of my Garand, for when the clip's empty.

I have never hunted pigs with a knife, but I have with a spear. It's a rush. A feeling I don't get with firearms, even muzzleloaders (the real kind, not the techno toys). I'm not sure I have the stones to hunt with a knife though!

It's easier with a knife.... they have too much leverage on the end of a spear.

Thanks, she will probably be breeding stock in about a year, after she passes her PennHip grading.

She is two generations out of the first OFA Excellent grand champion, Cowboy (Joshua's Sand Valley Sam), with Souza dogs on the other side. She should be an all-star.

Knife huntting

As far as I'm concerend knife hunting is the only way to hunt hogs. Any one can shoot one but do ya have the set to grab a leg and let the blood fly?

A lot of folks sell dogs by showing you a stud dog that is unnaturally ripped, same as horses. Equipoise does amazing things to a normal mammal.
