The True Meaning of Ammo Being Back on the Shelves

I would love to know were all these magical walmarts are that are carrying 22 at reasonable prices (as well as 223). All the ones around here are out, or only have 223 that is above 50 cents a round
Maybe they are at Walmart, I think maybe I have been shopping there at the wrong time and perhaps just I'm not willing to "come back after 8 when the truck is unloaded". Maybe I am going to the wrong Walmart, or maybe I been going to the wrong Walmart in the wrong state....at the wrong time...

Well I guess I could go to Dicks Sporting Goods.... no... wait..strike that..gotta boycott them.... Or maybe the new Field and Stream Store...no...strike that too..boycott them too...DSG owns them.

I could try Meijer but they haven't handgun ammo since December 2012. That leaves two local gun stores..where all they have is expensive 'match ammo' at $1 per round...however Cabelas is only 90 miles away in Louisville........

Hahaha. That reads about the same for me. Although to be fair my Cabelas is a little closer (its only an hour away).

I love these threads

I have been saying right from the beginning that this IS going to last at least 2 YEARS. We are close to the halfway mark and I am not changing my mind. I stop by my local Wal-Mart at Zero dark thirty as often as I can, up to 7 days a week. I have gone as much as a week or more without being able to buy anything. It is getting easier, but it is no where near what most people would call normal. Normal is a thing of the past in as much as prices will never be as low as they were pre 2013. Yes Wal-mart seems to have 223 on the shelves on a regular basis but most of it is 50 cents or more per round. Nine mil sells out as fast as they can put it out and 22 is all but non-existent. Forty S&W, 45 ACP and 380 ACP are hit or miss and 38, 44 and 357 are almost as hard to come by as 22. The one thing they all have in common is that they all have increased in price. Without going into great detail, I can tell you that most of Wal-marts prices have increased by at least 25%, some items have almost doubled. Some may come back down a bit but they will never be as low as they were pre-panic.
I reload for more than 20 different calibers so I don't need to buy ammo other than 22, 22 mag and 17 HMR. I buy it for the same reason that some people buy silver and gold, it is a good investment. I am not the reason you don't have ammo, you are. Get your lazy butt out of bed at 4:45 like I do and stand in line at 5;30 like I do and you will get ammo. Believe me, I have plenty. See you at Wal-Mart at zero dark thirty tomorrow.;)

CZ223, sorry, if I am up that early its for work only, not to buy ammo. My sleep is worth a little more to me than that. To be fair, I prepared for the worst, so not as worried about ammo as some might be.

And hey, maybe its just one part of the country that has the ammo disappearing this fast. From what some of the other posters have said, there is ammo on the shelves, just not in my part of Texas :)

Most of the 5.56 and .223 I see is under $0.50 per round, a lot of it is under $0.40 per round, and a good bit of it is under $0.27 per round.

Tulammo runs $5.27/20
Prvi Partizan (PPU) .223 runs $7.97/20
Federal XM855 runs $0.42-$0.47

I think you are probably being a bit dramatic and looking at prices of stuff that has always been overpriced, like the Winchester stuff

The only one of those three at those prices I have seen since January is the Tula, and that was only once or twice. Saw some PPU as well but it was more like $12 a box (could have been 62 gr or something else, I stopped at the $12 price). Glad to hear at least some people are seeing ammo and even at reasonable prices.

A few days ago I bought 600 rounds of Independence M193 in 20rd boxes for 42 cents/rd shipped. They had much more available but I already have some and don't need any more. My local Walmart has a bunch of Independence M855 but their price is 57 cents per round after tax... plus there's the purchase quantity limit. No thanks on the latter.

To claim new shooters to the hobby(5-20 million) have no impact on ammo supply and then go on to claim that someone getting a couple boxes a week at whatever price they can is the reason there is no ammo is simply a statement without a single fact to support it.

I don't know how those new shooters can be affecting supply that much when there isn't any supply. And most new gun owners don't really shoot that much. I would be shocked to see that a big percentage of them would shoot a brick a day even if it's just one day a week. I've seen lots of weeks where I went through 5 bricks. I don't think new shooters do that. If they were super interested they would probably have been shooting already. I'm sure there are some that jumped in with both feet and love it. But just like the rush to buy up AR's it wasn't too long before we started seeing a lot of used AR's on shelves in gun shops. Those new buyers just didn't really shoot that much.

Ain't much .22 shooting going on where I am at from either new or old. I go to the range 2-3 times a week and rarely see anyone. On the days I miss, I usually don't find evidence that anyones been there.

I am self employed so I can generally start when I want. I am usually at Work by 6:30 so it gets me off to a good start. Also, I have been buying ammo as I can since Obama first got into office so, this spring when prices were through the roof I sold a lot of my stock for double and triple what I paid for it. As far as the prices go, I have been watching them for a long time, believe me or don't.

Really. Are you saying 22lr is going for 68 cents a round because thats what Blazer Aluminum 158grain TC 38spcl is selling for at my local Academy.
I've never once paid more than .40/rd for .38spl and I just started buying it this summer. I've also never paid more then .04/rd for .22lr, but some current asking prices are ludicrous. I was at a gun show a few weeks ago where a 100-pack of mini-mags was $50 and that was a common price among several vendors. And they actually seemed offended when I laughed.

I think you are right. Although when the panic/shortage started...I first thought the shortage was going to last four to six months at the most, I was wrong.

Projecting this two year estimate, so by Dec 2014 the ammo supply should get back to normal and should last that way until the elections and if Hillary runs in 2016 and then if she wins....I don't think even shotgun shells will even be left on the shelves...Perhaps she will appoint anti-gunners Feinstein to head the BATF and Bloomberg to the Supreme Court.

I need to buy a couple of AR's plus a bunch of stripped lowers plus a bunch of mags... oh, and more ammo when I find it at "okay" prices. Mmm... but if it gets really bad then I may not be able to re-sell those lowers and extra mags. Hmm... what to do... what to do. Maybe just a boatload more ammo. Oops... here we go again. :)

And most new gun owners don't really shoot that much.

I'll wager that, on average, new gun owners shoot more than established gun owners. Sure, there is a subsection that shoots regularly, but for most it's a semi-annual event, at most, I think.

New shooters, or owners of new types/styles/kinds of guns, go out and shoot their new toy pretty soon after acquiring it.

and that's how it should be, familiarity breeds confidence and proficiency. Just don't make the mistake of buying something in .22lr ;)

i found a box 325 ct 22 at wally 2 weeks ago , which was the first since jan. for 18.99, been to 4 different walmarts since, not a round to be found

When I can pick up a couple of boxes of WWB 100 rounds of 9mm and a box of Federal 550 .22LR in the first or second store that I go to, every time that I want, then it will be over. Till then, the fat lady had yet to sing.

Notice that I said at least 2 years. I based this solely on what happened five years ago when Obama was elected. It was a solid two years before you could depend on getting what you wanted when you wanted, at least in my neck of the woods. That is my definition of normal. Every time some moron goes on a rampage with a gun, like today at LAX, there is always the chance of more absurd legislation being proposed/enacted which could trigger more panic buying. As someone else so astutely pointed out, the 2016 elections, as well as the 2014 elections, could trigger more fear of restrictions resulting in more panic buying.

CZ223 That is just the begining. Ex sen Gifford is getting a bunch of sponsors to donate a lot of money, I mean 100s of Millions to challenge the NRA.as per article on Yahoo about a week ago. so this is as good as it will get. Don't mean to be a doom-sayer, but the anti gun nuts have pledged to keep the pressure on to make shooting so expensive only the uber wealthy will be able to afford it.
