I got to shoot my new (to me) Taurus Model 65 today as the ammo finally arrived. I shot .38 Spl and .357 and both went without a hitch and the gun was very accurate. The only problem is that this gun has great (nice looking) wood grips with checked surface , but the area not checked is slick so that when the gun fires, it shifts up in my grip, so I am constantly re-gripping it between shots. As I said it's pretty accurate so it's a keeper, but I have two questions:

1) Where do you recommend getting new grips, probably rubber. and
2) Will gun cleaning solvent and oil hurt rubber grips as I get messy when I clean.

Thanks for your help.

Well, I guess maybe it is supposed to roll a little bit to help manage recoil. That being said, if you don't like them, you don't like them and it's a pretty easy (and cheap) problem to fix.

Here is Hogues solution: http://www.hogueinc.com/getgrip/merchant.ihtml?id=371&step=2

And Pachmyars: http://www.lymanproducts.com/pachmayr/

The Pachmayr page doesn't show a Mod. 65 obviously, but I looked at thier charts, and they do make a grip that fits your gun.

As to your last question, no, cleaning oils and solvents won't hurt your rubber grips. I don't think I would let them soak in the solvent, but I have several guns with rubber grips, one of them a little over 20 years old now, and I have not noticed any ill effects from the chemicals involved in standard cleaning products. Just wipe them down afer your done and call it good.

Good Luck!

I like the Pachmayr grips but the Hogue grip on my older 66 works pretty good. I believe it's the same size. Been on a long time and so far no problem with solvents.

Thanks to both of you. I looked at grips on the net last night and it seems that the Pachmayr grips are the best price for me and it looks like "CheaperThanDirt" has the best price for them this time.

Now I have to buy some new dies and bullets so I can start reloading .38 spl as I REALLY enjoyed shooting this gun yesterday! Have a great day!

Sounds like your grip is too loose. The checkered portion of the stocks should bite into the palm and fingers of your hand.

If you really prefer the looks of your wood grips, just consider a set of nice shooting gloves.
