Wild Wyo.....
Hey guys.... Thinking about picking up a wheelgun here..... I'm usually a semi-auto guy but the big loads aren't available unless you're talking DE or something, and I don't care for large bulky semi-autos. Kind of defeats the prupose......

I'm considering a .460 Smith- I like the fact that it shoots 3 different rounds.

I have a 10mm G-20 that I carry in the sticks.... 200 gr hardcasts at 1410/880 from DT loads with the 6" Jarvis in it; it will drop anything in CA as long as I do my part and has 15 + 1 capacity. If I'm going with a wheelgun I want the capability to go a LOT bigger, mainly because if I'm somewhere the 10 won't do it I need something like a big-bore revolver (or a rifle if the weight isn't a consideration). I'm moving back to Wyoming next year and I may run into some bigger critters there.....

I'm thinking .45 LC for target/plinking and .454 or .460 for the situations where I may need something more. The .460 seems to fit the bill for power and versatility....... Any thoughts?

I'd personally buy a Ruger Super Red Hawk in 454 Casull for less money. The 460 is nice, but the 454 will drop anything in North America, and most African game in the right hands.

um. . . . .

.45 colt for "plinking" ? Clearly you and I define that term differently:scrutiny: . The versatility of your choice is hard to beat unless you handload but I have a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt that carries better, points better and handles recoil better than the Smith, IMHO. 300gr hardcast bullets @ 1100 fps are bad news for just about anything you're likely to run across in the lower 48 states and if I get the notion to go plinking a box or two of 250 grainers @ 700 fps makes for a pleasant afternoon of shooting. If you have never handled a single action revolver in a hard kicking caliber I think you might be pleasantly surprised both in terms of the handling characteristics and also acquisition cost.

Ive been looking into an 8" 460 myself. I already load 45LC for a vaquero, for about $50 for 500, and would love to come up with some 200yd loads for the 460. It seems the 500 has taken the spotlight between the two newest chamberings, but .50 bullets cost more, don't have the variety and the 460 can be loaded for a lot higher velocity. The redhawk/blackhawk in454 is a great revolver, but Im a sucker for trying out new stuff, and it seems like the 460 was made for handloaders. over 2000fps with a 250-300gr or 250gr at 700fps and anywhere in between

I recently bought 2 Taurus's, 45acp revolver and a 9mm revolver so I could keep on using the same cheaper ammo.
