It's good, folks. REAL good.

National scene:

Bush has won. This means that a left-wing wacko as off-center as Kerry can't win at the national level - again. This acts as a check on the tendencies of any California legislature that eventually wants to hit the White House, which is a fairly high number.

We have the Senate! Holy crap, it looks like we've even unseated Daschle - Thune's slight lead has been increasing(!) and it's getting close to the end.

That means good supreme court picks, and just in time.

California Propositions:

Prop59 boosting the Public Records Act passed by a landslide - majority vote in *every* county. Excellent. It takes effect NOW - I'll post the PRAs being filed on CCW tomorrow .

The nastiest of the fiscal propositions were shot down. The vast majority of the propositions Arnold backed went his way, which is good in my opinion. A couple of brain-dead bond measures passed (sigh!) but nothing that serious.

There's one assembly race I've been watching closely - incumbent GOP Assemblyman in the 15th Assembly District Guy Houston.

Houston's a good guy on guns but what made this race "special" for us was the unbelievable slime-attack ads by the Dem - including specific fear-mongering on CCW!

The mailer was so nasty, some voters recieving it took it as a personal death threat.

I cannot possibly overemphasize the need for that smear campaign using CCW propaganda (among other things) to fail.

If I were you, Jim, I believe I'd be careful of counting on the Republicans in the U.S. Senate to do anything grander than hide under their beds of representatives of the Democratic (sic) party so much as threaten to act hostile to Bush's nominations.

I'm withholding judgement until I see actual results from that bunch.

With 100.0% ( 514 of 514 ) precincts reporting as of Nov 3, 2004 at 6:21 am. your man is ahead 54.9% to 49.1% - he didn't just win, he won by a landslide! An he did it in California. I am sure certain folks on both our and the other side of the CCW issue will notice.

Comedy note on Prop69!

Only TWO counties voted against expanding the DNA registry: Humboldt and San Francisco.

The latter's known wingnut liberalism makes that easy to understand. The comedy is in Humboldt - it is widely documented that the #1 agricultural product of that county, in hard dollars, is Marajuana .

The pot growers didn't want to get documented in the DNA registry!



(I have a second cousin running around somewhere on one leg - got the other blown off in a Humboldt pot patch in the woods he was raiding, hit a tripwire attached to a cheap single-shot 12ga about 25 years ago...)

Old Fuff: yeah, I caught that. I just mailed my "California election wrapup report" to my home base (Dave Workman of CCRKBA/Gun Week in WA state) mentioning the final tally for Houston, the blowout for Prop59 (83% in favor!) and other such good news.

Even though the Houston race was "only" a state Assembly seat, we should give it national attention due to the Dems trying to use CCW fearmongering - and failing. And in a district that has a pretty good liberal/conservative split going on, and generally very restrictive current CCW practices.

Oh ya. BIG win there!

I'd have voted against Prop. 69. I can see keeping felons' DNA; don't much like government registries, but I can see that one. However, requiring collection from everybody charged with, or even arrested for a felony? If he's acquitted, or never charged, why should he be kept in the state databse?

Think about it, Jim: how many people in power have you torqued off (just in the last month; let's keep the numbers reasonable)? Now, I'm sure you could easily fit the (remarkably-vague) description of a murder suspect somewhere in the state. No, I know you didn't kill anybody, and I doubt anybody could even get an indictment, let alone a conviction. But they don't need any process; just a cop with a pair of cuffs. Do you really trust the state, and the local guys, not to abuse this one?

I voted no on 69, too. If only they'd kept the "arrested" part out... by all means, keep DNA for all convicts. But arrestees? How about compelling samples from those "under suspicion", or "persons of interest", or anyone who meets a description within a dragnet?

For the record: I voted against 69 (yes, in line with the "Humboldt potheads") and for 66 (because of the documented abuses in three-strikes sentencing).

The state didn't see it my way. Shrug. Oh well. I'm a libertarian-leaning Republican, remember?

I didn't talk about it mainly because these are NOT "gun rights issues" and as a lobbyist for CCRKBA, I don't need to stir up more controversy. Granted, I *do* "stir up controversy" on my own time on electronic voting but with Alan's blessing and knowledge.

Let's please not thrash out the merits of 66 and 69 at this point, other than to note that both final votes are consistent with a voter base worried about violent crime.
