I couldn't find a thread on the S&W 500, so here goes: what do y'all think of it, as a possible new gun for shooting just for fun (and reloading, if Dillon comes out with a conversion kit for it for the Square Deal B press)?

Also, 10 1/2" or 8 1/2" barrel? I don't do any hunting--this would be just a for-fun shooting gun. And, of course, I'd be out to reload cartridges (at $2.50 each new, definitely!)

Good gun? Not worth the money? The only revolver I own right now is an SP101 .357 magnum. If I didn't get the S&W 500, I'd get the S&W 686P in a 6" barrel (for accuracy) so that I could share ammo with my other revolver.

Needless to say, I am not intending to carry the S&W 500. :)

Something tells me this is going to be a loooooooooong thread !

If you are shooting a "Fifty Smitty" just for fun ..(Not that there's anything wrong with that ! Just look at the personal ads in any liberal newpaper or magazine : Lots of folks are into "discipline" )...be sure to wear your cactus gloves. :D

This gun has replaced the .44 as my absolute favorite handgun. I now have seven Smith 500s, including a PC Hunter 10 1/2", a de-comped and de-lugged 8 3/8" gun, and an almost-finished de-comped and de-lugged 5 1/2" version.

is a thread that has some good information along with uninformed speculation. Another shorter one is

and also

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59723

and

At the risk of sounding conceited, I think my posts in these threads will give you the most actual information, as I have been doing a lot of development work with this gun.

Also, here's an article I wrote that may interest you:

Bottom line: If you like powerful, accurate revolvers, there is NOTHING like the new Smith. It would be a bargain at twice the price.
