5k rounds through my HS2000. I had FTE problems with the original extractor so it was replaced with the updated Springfield extractor at 2400 rounds and has been reliable since.

I've been shooting it and no problems but occasionally it'll spit the brass at my head, but mainly when I'm using CCI Blazers. With Winchester it still extracts out of my face.

Today I was unloading a Ruger and when I pulled the slide back to eject a round I'd forgotten how other guns do it. It spit the round enthusiastically a few feet away from me. I tried the same and it didn't even eject but fell out from the empty mag well.

I'm assuming this indicates that it's time for a new extractor? I've been carrying it and putting rounds through it at the range almost on a weekly basis without a malfunction so far.

Thanks!

Caveat: I don't know all that much about the HS2000.

IME, Rugers give seriously positive ejection because of the design of their ejectors. The ejector itself is a spring that will unload on the cartridge case when the extractor turns it loose. I wouldn't use a Ruger as a basis for comparison.

Many, actually most guns will drop a round right down the magwell when hand cycled. If there is no stout recoil impulse from the slide, there isn't enough energy available to send a case flying. As hard as you can yank that slide, you're still not coming close to replicating the energy from firing.

When the extractor will no longer remove a fired case from the chamber and cannot be tuned (bent, re-sprung, or whatever is appropriate for the model) to work reliably, it is time to replace it. If casings are coming out, it is fine. If they're smacking your forehead, it probably needs tuning, but not replacement. If it's Blazer aluminum causing the problem, all bets are off.
