That is unusual. Any idea why they are not legal? It's a centerfire rifle cartridge and a large enough bullet. Just as powerful as a 30-30. What state?

Colorado. The bullet is big enough, but the state mandates 1000 ft-lb at 100 yards. I can find a factory load that is just about rated for that, but I have no particular desire to set myself up for an argument and maybe a fine. I imagine that the standard is set up that way because 1) we have lots of out of state hunters who may not be familiar with long distance hunting and 2) the standard for elk (big and tough) is the same as deer (relatively easy to kill). Bear in mind that the energy standard for handgun hunting big game is just over half that at 50 yards, and the regs theoretically make a 54 cal round ball pushed by 25 grains of powder legal to hunt elk.

Thanks

Thanks. Some of that does make sense. Elk are tough critters! I was wondering how, if handgun hunting was legal, why was 300BLK not legal.

If game would be full power jacketed loads.
Ah, I didn't see that in the OP or your other posts. I too would pick the 350 over the 300, that said we both also already have 30-06's that beat either for that job.

Yeah, once you have a 22, 12 gauge and a 3006 everything else is for fun. Fwiw, I think 3006 is unnecessary and a bit of overkill for deer. My last two were in muzzleloader season with round balls and I would much prefer to chase deer with a 350 or my 35 remington.

I have never killed anything too dead but I am all for a new gun, enjoy.

I can give you a little something to work off of, I tried 7.3 gn of TB with a 180 jhp in 357 maximum out of a 16" barrel. They averaged 902 fps, I would expect cast and coated to go faster with the same charge. Would be a good place to start for you as the 350 is a bit longer, as will be the heavier bullet.

I have worked with Trailboss and 180gr Jacketed HP. From a previous post...

"My first attempt at subsonic 180gr XTP in the 350 legend. I resized these to 0.356 for this test. Trail Boss is the only powder I had on hand that I felt comfortable testing. Using an OAL of 2.195 with Hornady brass. I started with 7.0 gr Trail Boss about 80% case fill. Avg. velocity was 816fps with extreme spread of 111fps. Accuracy was very poor @ 2.2" 50 yards."

I have worked up to 100% case fill and it worked much better. I will look gmfor that data and let you know what I ended up with. Please post your results.
