Longshot, It sounds like you will have a great rifle. I am glad to see the rifle and follow the progress.

My only thought is to check the reciever before doing the machine work. My friend has an Eddystone that was re-arsonaled has a cracked reciever. We have gone back and forth on a welding process and heat treating.:banghead: I am keeping my eye out for a decent reciever for his rifle.

Cordell, God bless you brother. Your a first class gentleman who is an encouraging mentor. Your rifles are outstanding. I do have a few of the old gun digest's and yes indeed, there are several '03 sporters. I fancy the Williams adjustable sights on that rifle. I cant imagine a barrel full of my favorite rifles for $10-15.00 each.

My Dad is fond of the Marines also. I would like to spend an afternoon hearing about the bay of pigs.
Thank you for your service to our Country, encouragment and kind words.

sky horse i will let you know if/when CMP starts selling them again i think the had some barreled recivers on their site seculed for release sometime this year

Bay Of Pigs

Hello longshot and skyhorse,
Unfortunately guys I missed the Bay of Pigs by 2 years. The Bay of Pigs took place in the spring of 1961 we relieved the Marines on the fence in 1963. I really don't know much about the BOP's, but what I have heard is as follows.

The main invasion was to be 1500 Cuban exiles who had been trained the previous year by the CIA and landed at a swampy area called the Bay Of Pigs on April 17th and by April 20th many were dead and the rest had been captured.

As with most of our "intelligence/secrecy" by the time the 1500 Cuban exiles reached inland Fidel Castro with 20 tanks and 20,000 soldiers were waiting for them. As I understand it the Marines never left the aircraft carrier USS Essex, by order of Gen David M Shoup. He was, IMHO a brilliant man and most likely saved untold thousands of lives with his decision. Any time a covert agency gets involved with military strategies there is going to be a problem. This goes on further with the fact that no air support was planned for the attack, again politics and agencies not military.

skyhorse, Thank you again for the kind words! As far as Ye Olde Hunter is concerned yep they were in barrels on the showroom floor. 17's, 14's, rolling blocks, mausers, martini's, police shotguns etc etc.... Most of the nicer "choice" pieces were squirreled away in back, but once in a while you found a treasure in those barrels!!!!

Have to run we are heading to town....Take care and God bless. cordell

longshot,
Judging by the picture it looks like you are going to need a mag well, follower, follower spring & floor plate! I may have a spare floor plate if you need it, let me know and I will start digging!!! Take care and God bless. cordell

Cordell, Thanks for the lesson on the BOP. sometimes it's Just amazing that a plan can go so far south. In the end I guess it worked out becouse the nukes stood down.

Longshot. I was thinking of your project the other night when I was cleaning my M1917. May I make a suggestion? I had difficulty matching up scope bases on my rifle and ended up having to do a little machining to an old Leuopld adjusto-mount to get mine set up. I would sugest that the smith that machines yours, also furnishes the matching base.

On my rifle, I have a Marbles rear and a Lyman front sight. I only mount the scope for deer/elk in the flat. Here are some pictures of how it's set up.

Have a great day Gentlemen.

Hello skyhorse,
Actually the Bay Of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis "the nukes stood down", were two totally different issues. The Cuban crisis came about in Oct of 1962 (6 months after the BOP) when Kennedy made the blockade off the coast of Cuba, effectively quarantining the island. Many stories go around about Khrushchev backing down and removing Russian missiles from Cuba, in reality it was a wash with us signing a pledge not to invade Cuba and to remove our missiles from Turkey. Take care and God bless. cordell P.S. I like your rifle....cordell

Longshot, that's the way I was headed with my rifle also. It was not until the game headed for the hills that I chnged my thoughts. I have the scope and mount ready to go. Never hurts to have a set of sights as a backup. Yes I kept my trigger guard the same. I like the look both ways.
Enjoy Colorado, I want to hear all all about your rifle in action.

Cordell, Ah-Ha... I thought it was one and the same conflict, but actually it was the two countries reacting to each others actions. They should have had Marines teach us history back in school. Thanks for the information. I still think it is strange to have a communist island right off our coast. But then again we have California.
Thanks for the complements on the old girl. I just finnished a gun cabinet so she has a new home.
She moved in tonight.
