Vehicle Safe?

Who here has a vehicle safe? Im interested in finding some sort of setup to put in my Jeep as soon as my CWL arrives (hopefully this week. ) I tend to frequent places that are on the no-go list with a firearm. Places like the post office, college, etc. Im looking for some sort of safe/lock box that I could bolt to the floor. I dont like the idea of the tossing it in my glovebox since almost all glove boxes can be opening rather easily.

I have plenty of room under the seat of my Jeep and dont have any problem blasting bolts through the floor. Does anyone have pictures of their setup? Id be interested to hear/see how anyone here has they vehicle setup to store their firearm.

Safe in Car

If someone breaks into your Jeep they will find whatever is there in a short period of time. If you have some sort of safe bolted to the floor they will devinetely get that. I usually have all kinds of stuff in the space behind the front seat and keep my pistol hidden there. Also, if I leave a gun in the car, it is a gun that will not cause me great financial loss for example: CZ 82 or Tokarev.

That's what I would go with. Tie the cable to your seat, key entry makes it easy to gain access when needed. There's also one with a combination lock so it would be keyless. It's called the "20."

I've been thinking about this also to some extent. A safe would also allow the storage of emergency cash or credit card for some unusual circumstances.

My thoughts have been along the lines of a home made lock box with vehicle's electric system supplied electric locking mechanism. The electric lock would be say, 4-5 switches that the consequence of using the wrong combination would set off the horn. I have some 1/4" scrap stainless plate that is next to impossible to drill without drilling it under water or oil or cut without some heavy duty grinder. I would weld up a simple box with lid. The plate is something I picked up to make a few stainless anchors for use in my boat on the ocean to avoid the eventual rust stains that always results. Using a 14" chop saw with medal cutting blades took 45 minutes and 2 complete 14" circular blades to make 18" of cut. Tough stuff. I probably will attempt an in-house safe also but in a larger capacity.

Next time I make an anchor for a friend, I'll try it. The welding anybody can do, but the cutting of the parts and pieces takes a large commercial sheer or plasma cutter that are normally only available at the larger machine shops. And it would be more stupid than the typical stupid crook to take a torch to it as it would be obvious that they would burn up anything in the box trying to torch it open.

I'll try to draw up a generic design in the near future and will post.

Good luck getting this out of a Jeep. You would have to remove the seat or cut the seat mounting bracket to remove. Either of those will take plenty of time. It took my 2 hours to get my seat out and broke an air ratchet in the process.

I have a '08 Wranger and have installed 2 of their products. I have the stereo cover and the massive center console. Their stuff is good and worth every cent. I keep my gun and ipad in the center console without doors and don't worry about it.

I installed this one into my JK the other day. It is a great safe, I can not access it from the divers seat, have to get out to access it. I would highly recommend it.

The FAS1 works great as a car/truck safe if you have a good-sized console between the front seats. It uses thicker steel than most similarly sized safes.

[Just One Shot]

In one car I have a gun safe with a cable wrapped around the pass. seat. In the other I have a lock box bolted to the floor of my trunk. Either one can be defeated given enough time but the only time my gun is in either of these is if I need to go into someplace that is posted no guns. Those times are few and far between so anyone who does defeat them would more than likely find them empty.

I have a Smitybilt security console in between the seats in my Jeep. It will take someone at least with a very and very strong screwdriver, BFH, or crowbar to open it. The average smash and grabber won't go to the trouble. I often leave a gun in it.

I dont really see the point of cable devices. They provide minimal security, can be easily cut, but would help in just a 'smash and grab' vehicle break in.

All my guns came with cable locks...I dont really understand buying a box or safe that is cable-locked to something in the car...how is that safer than just the cable thru the slide or trigger and whatever you'd cable the box to (like the seat frame)? Safer would be to take the slide with you really, or barrel (?) if a revolver and just cable the rest.

But again, I'm hoping to find at least a 'bolt the box to the frame' kind of solution. To hopefully slow them down a little more.

As someone posted earlier, look through the tuffy security website. Tuffy has all kinds of products made for the Jeep Wrangler from reinforced center consoles and glove boxes to floor mounted lockboxes.

I have a small Tuffy lockbox underneath the back seat of my Grand Cherokee (where the amplifier for the premium sound option would go but I don't have that option) that I bought after my Jeep was broken into. The box is out of view and has 4 grade 8 bolts holding it to the floor, if a thief was to have the presence of mind to look under there it would still take a fair amount of effort to yank it out- especially without a BIG prybar or some kind of power tool.

That being said, the one I have is fairly small and wouldn't fit even a subcompact handgun but it fits my GPS, iTouch, faceplate to my stereo and cell phone (I can't bring a phone into work).

Jeeps can be easy targets especially with a soft top or no top. Buy something that is constructed of at least 11 gauge (1/8") sheetmetal and make sure it is bolted down with lock nuts on the inside if possible. I wouldn't use anything with a cable or thinner metal in a jeep. Looks like the Tuffy products are a decent option and will fit nicely.

I have a lock box [ sorry but dont know the name ] that is VERY heavy and has both locking devices,key AND combination.

Its attached to the rear seat with a motorcycle cable through the safe handle.

Unless you already knew it was there AND you brought real tools = the safe is secured.

I feel very secure knowing I have the option of leaving a handgun in there,or using it so as to go into a anti-gun establishment - and I try to NOT go into such places.

The guy that designs an in-dash (below the radio compartment) or console for Chevy or Ford pickups that accomodates a 4" barreled revolver/semi auto that is generic enough to fit most frame curvatures and is lined, perhaps, to prevent marring of the finish and some type of flipup cover (lockable) could make a fortune. While driving you simply slide your weapon in so it's always at the ready. The current consoles, unless you never put anything in them, aren't quite enough. Ok, so I'm just a dreamer looking for a solution to MY problem
