Weapon Light Mounting

I was wondering which side of the rifle are you supposed to mount a weapon light if you are unable to mount it to the underside, or is it just personal preference.
I am planning to install rails on a couple of my rifles for the TLR-1 and was thinking of just placing it where it would be the easiest to manipulate.

I have a 3 slot CAA front sight clamp-on rail for my AR15 and I mount my M6 on the right side. I find that the easiest to manipulate with my left hand thumb.

I perfer for it to be under the barrel at the 6 o'clock. when I corner and need to transition I get the the same amount of light with min.exposure of body. Or you can use the light system below and have all your bases covered .

That one doesn't throw enough light around. I think if each was a 300 lumen LED light, then maybe... just maybe... it could work in a home defense situation where you have interior lights anyway.

I have my TLR-1 on the right side of the rail. I am a lefty, so i use my thumb in a vertical position to operate it. I then mounted a Surefire 6P in a VLTOR offset mount on the left side for back-up lighting, AND i have a light on both sides of the gun for cornering.

It really comes down to personal preference and how you prefer to hold your hand on the forearm/vertical grip of the rifle. I use a very unique grip on my vertical foregrip. I have my index finger straight out along the forearm, my thumb upward, and the remaining three fingers wrapped around the grip. It's weird, but I outshoot everyone on SWAT that gives me crap about it.

Whichever side your grip allows easy thumb activation is probably the easiest answer. I pretty much use the left side with or without a forward pistol grip at this point, but it's a personal preference kind of issue.
