I just got a pretty nice Westernfield 12 gauge from a friend. Some toolbox cut a really nice bird gun into a riot gun (19" barrel) but overall it's in pretty good shape. It looks almost 100% identical to my dad's Mossberg 500 he bought new in '69. Except for the checkering on the stock and a slightly different "pistol grip" in the stock, they are exactly alike. I really like the engraving of the bird hunt. So what's the deal? I'm young (22) and have never heard of Westernfield. How was the company? Good, bad? I'm going to try to put my dad's 28" barrel on it to see if they are interchangeable.

The SN is G0593xx if anyone *might* on the off chance know when it was made.

ANY info on it would really be awesome! Thanks

There really wasn't a "Westernfield" gun company.

"Westernfield" was a brand name used for sporting goods by Montgomery Wards. All the guns were actually made under contract by real gun manufacturing companies.

The reason your Westernfield looks like a Mossberg, is because IT IS.
One of the prime makers of store name guns was Mossberg, who made your shotgun.

Thanks dfarris, as soon as I pulled dad's 500 out of the safe, I knew it was indeed the same gun. This is cool because if I want to go bird hunting, I'll just steal his barrel. I like this westernfield better than his mossy because of the really, really nifty engraving on both sides of the reciever!!
