I was thinking about checking into a rem 7400 ,does anyone know how accurate and reliable they are?

My friend has one. It shoots about 2.25 inch groups at 100 yards and better. The trigger is terrible IMO, and there is nothing you can do about it. The function has been perfect with my friend's, but we are clean freaks when it comes to our guns, so I don't know how the function would be if not cleaned regularly. I think the gun is a fine hunting rifle and is built to take game, and it does it well for my friend. I don't consider the gun a 300 yard rifle, but If you keep your shots within 200 and maybe 250 the gun will make you a fine hunting rifle. Take Care.

Grandpa has used a 742 for 20 years on every hunting trip...no problems yet, and it shoots minute of coke-can as far you can see in Sierra Nevada woods.

I had a 7400 for a while, but sold it to get something else...I just couldn't justify carrying around the weight, when my lever actions work so well for deer. I'm a big fan of the .30-30, but if I felt like I needed more power, I'd pick up another 7400.

I like it - I paid for a fluff and buff and my trigger was fine.

I like it - I paid for a fluff and buff and my trigger was fine. I told a good general gun smith that I would pay him for his time to do whatever he thought appropriate and got back a rifle with a quite decent trigger and good accuracy. I know he pulled the barrel I have no idea whether he trued any threads or profiled anything. These are not a cheap main battle rifle and there is no reason for an extra capacity magazine. They are fine hunting rifles and in my experience will range with a good bolt action in the same cartridges. Easy and convenient to carry.

From the hundreds of them that I've seen shot or shot myself
(they are probably the 2nd or 3rd most popular deer rifle in my state) they tend to have good accuracy for the first 3 or 4 shots an then accuracy goes all to hell until its allowed to cool down. A very nice hunting rifle if that's what you are looking for.

Won't feed hollowpoints e.g. Barnes. Can't readily clean it from the breech. Can't lock the bolt back with the magazine removed for cleaning or to clear a malfunction. Heavy for their size. Decent but not stellar accuracy.

There are far better choices for the money if you just need a hunting rifle - Savage and Vanguard bolties, for example. If you need a semiauto hunting rifle, I'd save my pennies and get a used BAR instead of a new 7400.
