What Marlin 1895 barrel length looks best in your opinion? (photo inside)

I was not trying to be negative and meant no offense. Just pointing out something entertaining to me as I didn't notice it right away.

The question, to me, is akin to asking which looks better- a m39 or 91/20, vz24 or 98/22, type 99 long or short. They are all beautiful, but I do love the look of the longer barrels

I've never tried to make a fashion statement with a hunting rifle. I like the one that shoots best and puts meat in the freezer. The shorter barrel would probably be handier in rough scrub.

16.5 is very handy and still packs a real wallop. One finds oneself gravitating towards the faster burning powders, however...just to save the ears. Here's a question for the gang: I've been using 405 grain JSPs over R-7 at about 1600 fps for many years and my shoulder is on strike. Any ideas for a kinder, gentler load for a 45-70 shorty?

Have you considered Trail Boss loads?

405 GR. CAST LFP
IMR Trail Boss
12.0gr > 971 fps 24,500 CUP
13.0gr > 1007 fps 25,600 CUP

Thanks for the tip, 1858. I should have specified that I have an old micro-groove barrel, so cast lead is out. I like the 405 grain JSP from Remington; any idea if Trail Boss works well with jacketed bullets?
