What to do with old live ammo?

a year or two back i was showing a friend of mine my california registered ASSAULT WEAPON. ooh.

i showed him how to load, how to charge, etc.

in the middle of the demonstration he picked up one round and said, 'hey, this one's gone bad." I laughed and said, "ammo never goes bad..." and then realized that indeed, half of the neck on the case was missing! this was an s&b .223 where the neck had cracked and lost quite a bit of brass.

i sat on it for about 2 years, not knowing what to do with it. then one day i went to turner's (a gun shop) and tried to offer it to the guy behind the corner.

he looked at it.
he shrugged.
then he simply pulled the .223 right out of the case, and handed back both components to me.

I proceeded to pour the powder out onto some wet dirt and then dump the bullet in a dumpster. the empty primed casing went into another dumpster. i suppose i should have put the round in the range's dud can, but for some reason i didn't think of it.

id recommend that you use the dud can if you can't give it away.
