I'm in the Military and I'm from Louisiana. I'm stationed at FT Hood Killeen Texas. I got my Hunting license and tags today but I have no where to hunt other than on post. I'm a avid hunter and I've missed two Deer seasons in a row due to deploying in Oct 06 and returning Jan 08. The hunting in Iraq aint as good as you think. I need a line on some public land or a soldier friendly land owner within a hour or so from where I live. That way I can justify it with the wife. If you can help me I would greatly appreciat it. I don't want to hunt on post because I just need to get away from the Army for a little while and man they have some strange rules.

Get your APH annual public hunting permit. That will give you some places to hunt. They will send you a map booklet and just thumb through it. I get every year even though I have a lease. It will also give you the oppurtunity for special draw hunts. Also post on Craigslist there will probably be a military friendly land owner that would let you hunt. Sorry to hear about the hunting in Iraq. Thank you for everything good luck and hope that helps.
APH is $45 more

Try to make friends and influence people. That is what I did. Remember that people pay a bit of money for a lease so they are not always so eager to give it away for free. You can always pay if you have the money but it gets expensive. The plus side of a deer lease is that often times it is a year around lease so you can use it to hunt other game and camp on when the deer are not in season.

You might also consider just hog hunting. More than a few ranchers and farmers will let you hunt hogs for free if they think they can trust you not to make a mess or cause problems.

Option two is the 6 hour drive back to LA.

Thank you, I appreciate the advice. The APH sound good that will be mondays project. I've got a place to hog hunt but the guy won't give up any deer even though he's overrun with them.

It'll take a couple weeks to get the map booklet in the mail once you get your APH. But then deer season is a ways off yet. I'll look through last years a find a place close to you so oyu can scout it or shoot dove there if you want.

There are always a few places that will charge you by the day on their property. Check the classified ads and talk to other folks. These usually aren't the places you will shoot a Boone & Crocket record. Many land owners are more willing to let you hunt if you will shoot does only.

i seem to remember public hunting on fort hood. lake whitney has some army corps land. in texas leasing land is the rule of the land. find a place on the river with a little ag land and you will have year round hunting.

Becareful before you go army corps. Some places are shotgun no larger than #4 shot and some are archery only at least in N Texas. I think that TPWD will list regs for army corps areas.

Ask your C/O about hunting on the base in Ft.Hood.That place is covered with deer. We used to go 4wheelin on the base back in the 80's when they had public use area's and we saw deer everywhere.

I got on craigslist and mentioned that I'd like to hunt some deer, and was willing to do some work in exchange. Found a local farmer who needed me to toss some bails, eliminate coyotes and clear some brush, and I get to hunt for free this year. Try out posting an ad and see if anyone needs some work for some hunting time.
