I'm sure they ban all gunshops at the present. Some modificaiton of the law will be necessary since you have to be a resident of the state where you purchase your handgun.

Someone posted the number of FFLs in DC a while back, there were quite a few (someone at Brady was one of them LOL).

Gun shops in D.C.

According to the local news, two shops have already filed paperwork to be licensed to open gun stores in the District.

Also, the first D.C. resident went to police HQ to apply for a handgun permit. He was turned away and told to wait 21 days while the city council figured out the rules and procedures to put in place.

Another note about this guy - he was wearing an OBAMA '08 ball cap.

Actually, it's the Violence Policy Center. Their FFL # is 1-54-000-01-8C-00725. Not having a storefront with posted hours, his FFL is invalid, though I was unable to get any cooperation from the BATFE on the matter, and it was renewed in February.

Perhaps Mr. Sugarmann can make some nice side income selling handguns. Now that it's legal, and all.

Wouldn't it be a hoot if Fenty calls for some strict BATF enforcement assistance inspecting the new FFLs and it nails the VPC?

There are a number of FFLs currently. They mostly sell to the armed security guard companies in D.C.

The mayor said something (on TV) to the effect that semi-automatic handguns (ie pistols) would still not be allowed. I don't know where he gets this information. Maybe hs is talking about laws such as Maryland has??

Added: (Relative to the 21 days) You would think that DC would have already done the work to "figure out what they are going to do" after the DC vs Heller ruling. 21 days on the surface seems okay, but they should have been ready. They seem to be talking about NYC style registration. I see problems down the road.

Kinda depends on what he's thinking. DC city laws are on line.

In Title 22 there's a prohibition against machine guns
>>§ 22-4514. Possession of certain dangerous weapons prohibited; exceptions.
(a) No person shall within the District of Columbia possess any machine gun, sawed-off shotgun, or any instrument or weapon of the kind commonly known as a blackjack, slungshot, sand club, sandbag, switchblade knife, or metal knuckles,...
and the goofy people there have defined 'machine gun' as
>>§ 22-4501. Definitions.
(c) "Machine gun," as used in this chapter, means any firearm which shoots automatically or semiautomatically more than 12 shots without reloading.
If there's anything specifically restricting a semi-auto with a mag capacity < 12, I don't see it.

ETA: saw some discussion of DC's interpretation: apparently, any gun that has EVER had a 13+ magazine available is classified as a machine gun, regardless of current magazine in use. Comment thread at Volokh, I think.
