I'm getting in to the BLAM, BLAM, BLAM world of loading for a couple of .223's (Mini-14 and an AR). I've been loading for a bolt .223 for several years, but hate the thought of wasting a good soft point bullet for plinking and informal target shooting. So far both the AR and especially the Mini seem to prefer 60+ gr. bullets. I don't want to load steel core bullets as I'm a firm believer in lead core for best accuracy. I tried some PMC X-Tac 62 gr. steel core loads which shot bad in the AR and worse in the Mini. SO, where can I find 62 gr. lead core bullets? Midway and Widener's has been sold out for a long time and the only other place I know of is Golden West. I tried a few of their .30 caliber bullets in my match rifle but wasn't impressed with the accuracy, or lack thereof.
Anyone know of any place else?

Thanks!

What level of accuracy are you looking for or expecting? FMJ bullets, regardless of the core material, aren't going to set the world on fire with their accuracy. The non-uniformity in the heel/boat tail region of the bullet is going to keep them from really shining.

What kind of shot groups are you getting from AR/Mini14? ARs, especially Mini 14s won't produce the level of accuracy that a bolt .223 rifle will produce.

I think you may be chasing the wrong variable ... your lack of accuracy may be rifle related.

BTW, what is your AR's barrel length and twist rate?

+ 1000!

FMJ is never a good accuracy bullet, regardless of whether it has a steel penetrator inside it or not.

At least buy a box of 55 or 60 grain V-Max, Nosler Ballistic-Tip, or HP Match and see what your rifles can do with them.
Then you have a frame of referance to judge accuracy with other bullets.

If you find good results, you can get Midway Dog Town 55 grain SP bullets in bulk for pretty good prices.

Here is the differance in FMJ and Nosler Ballistic Tip.
Same exact load other then the bullets.

I don't have pictures of the targets but my Savage 12FV would shoot 55gn FMJs into shotgun patterns (5" @ 100 yds is proabably the best they did) while it will drive pretty much anything else sub-MOA. Some are better than others, but on the whole they are not the bullet to choose for precision work.

From the AR with open sights, 2" or so @ 100, the Mini, 3" - 4" is probably more realistic. I've fired Hornady .30 caliber 150 gr. FMJBT out of my K-31's and 1903/1903A3's and gotten some really, really good accuracy. My match K-31 with this bullet has grouped 10 shots into less than 1.75" @ 100 with aperture sights with an occassional group down around 1.5"

With the Mini, I get HORRIBLE groups with the three factory loads I've tried. Handloads however are much better (all shot with factory aperture sights):
63 gr, Sierra @ 50 yds.,

60 gr. Hornady @ 50 yds. in cluding sighters on left side:

55 gr. Sierra SBT @ 100 yds.:

The AR is far less picky. The target on the left is is a handload with a 55 gr. Sierra SBT, the one on the left Serbian (PPU) 55 gr. FMJ, both shot at 100 yds.:

The barrel is a 16" Dissipator (full sight length) with a 1-in-9" twist.

I don't have much experience with .22 caliber FMJ bullets, but I've shot lots of .30 caliber's. In fact the GP-11 military ammunition loaded in Switzerland for K-31's uses a 174 gr. FMJ bullet and I have to use expensive target bullets to come close to the accurracy of this ammo. Absolute match grade stuff:

Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and try some of the Golden West bullets. I have a Remington 788 I can use as a test bed to see if the bullets are accurate as that particular rifle shoots well just about anything I feed it.

The accuracy from your AR seems to be reasonable IMO for the bullet you're using.

Yes, it shoots pretty good, but I'd like to use 62 gr. bullets. Guess I'll wait till someone gets some in!

I would say so, especially with a 16" barrel. :D

As to the Mini 14 shot groups ... well, you know. ;)

Maybe you can send Jake an email at RMR to let you know when he may get some 62 gr. lead core bullets. He gets different bullets all the time, perhaps he can look some for you - [email protected]

Armscor makes 62gn lead core FMJs. The general consensus is that they come out of the barrel...that's about it. If you want something more than that in the form of an FMJ, you might be left wanting. If you're willing to pony up the dough, and don't need FMJ, there Sierra, Nosler, Hornady, Winchester and Speer all make bullets in the 60-64gn range designed for hunting.

giggityguns, I think the OP wants a full lead core bullets as gibrass indicates, "M855 ... These have the penetrater in the nose." And they are pulled bullets.

The M855 cartridge has a 62-grain, gilded metal-jacketed, lead alloy core bullet with a steel penetrator. The primer and case are waterproof.

I remember Widener's used to sell them for a really good price. I am still shooting my remaining loads with consistant "rings" of the 6-inch steel target at 200 yards with original iron sights. Good enough for me...YMMV.

I was going to suggest the 64grn winchester power point as a similarly priced alternative....but DAMN those have gotten expensive. I have had good accuracy from both my 700adl .223 and a friends mini with those bullets tho.
