I've recently been testing my first loads for my .270. They're 130gr Hornady Spire Points. I'm halfway though shooting my groups of different powder charges, and finally got one that came in just under an inch for 5 shots. Velocity over the chrony averaged 2826fps. I've got 4 more loads of increasing charges to test. I also recently got invited on my first black bear hunt out in PA's Allegheny National Forest. Shots shouldn't be more than 100 yrds. I've got 150gr SST's that I haven't loaded up yet. If I had to I could start working on those, or pick up some Partitions to load this weekend. I'd rather just stick with the spire points. Would that be a bad decision?

The interlocks will be fine for black bear. Pretty much anything you would use for deer will work for black bears. I took my bear with a 130gr federal fusion out of my .270, right though the vitals, it went about 30 yards and it was done.

I would probably stick with the spire point Interlocks. Those are good bullets and you have found an accurate load. In my experience, the SSTs shoot pretty well, but they have pretty violent expansion, much more than a plain old spire point. Consequently, they don't always give enough penetration. Bears aren't all that tough, so the 130 gr would be just fine. If you have time, then it's fine to try to find an accurate load for the Partitions. But this close to hunting season, I would probably just load up a good batch of the accurate load you found and shoot them from different positions to build your confidence before the season opens.

Try loading those 130's with RL19. The .270 win. is one of my favorite cartridges to load and hunt with and is a much better performer than what your getting. I've always seen at least 3100 fps with sub MOA groups with a 130 gr. Speer Hot Core BT. I've killed both elk and black bear with that combination, one shot and they dropped right then and there too.

I'm using reloader 19 with the current loads I'm testing....but as mentioned before haven't made it through all of them yet. That load I mentioned was the 3rd of 8 moving from weakest of course. Finally got to test #4 today. #3 is still winning though. And with that velocity I figure its on par w/ a 7mm-08.
