this is sort of a not bad question, but i think that the mag depends on the gun. I have several mags that i really like using. The novaks have given me very minimal problems, as well as metalforms and chips. However i have a buddy whos gun will not work with anything but these stupid cheap mags that he got for like 6 dollars a peice at a gunshow. (we dont know what brand they even are) and they wont even stay in my gun. So i think its a matter of what works well in your particular gun.
Don't know if they're the best, but the Chip McCormick Shooting Stars turned my Charles Daly EFS into a reliable piece of shooting iron. Prior to the conversion from the factory Mec-Gars (usually a darn good mag) I would get a failure to feed with nearly every mag. I had totally lost confidence in that pistol. Have not had a single FTFeed since the conversion. There may be better mags out there, but I have one that works and I'm sticking with it. It shoots FMJ and HPs with no problems now. A few hundred rounds ago I tried using the old factory mags and had the same FTFeed problem. Bottom line, the CMCs solved my problem.
Got Novak mags with my S&W SC, nary a single FTF in some 400+ rounds.
I've used both McCormick and Wilson mags in some pretty dusty and dirty conditions for IPSC matches and just plain target shooting and plinking. All have 1000's of rounds thru them and none have ever failed (and I'm not easy on mags as I rarely clean 'em). I've used the CM Power Mags and shooting stars. I've used the Wilson's that came with my S&W Target 1911. For the price the CM's are the better deal and just as good as the wilson's IMO. The only complaint I have is that the one and only non-stainless CM mag I bought will not drop free from my S&W 1911 but it has fed flawlessly for many, many a round (I just won't use it in an IPSC match).
My son has liberated my S&W for the summer and he took four metalforms and four Novaks, For the most part he is out at the farm or on the golf course all summer, when at the farm he shoots about 200 rounds a day every day, so far he claims no malfs at all, none. I am upset that he his breaking in my 1911 without me but jealous of his summer, oh to be young again.
