I scored paydirt at the range the other week and came home with a nice bucket of brass.... lot's of it .45 acp (which I don't often find and am running short on).

In the process of segregating and tumbling it, I came accross quite a bit of WIN NT +P in 9mm Luger.

Does the factory NT loading use a normal primer?

Is the primer pocket a normal small pistal primer size?

I seem to recall setting aside some of the 45 NT brass a year or so ago, that had odd ball primer pockets, so I was wondering about the 9mm.

The NT means "Non Toxic" and I believe it's referring to the lack of lead in the components making them safe for use in indoor ranges. I think the bullets are lead with a total metal jacket and the primers are a lead-free compound.

The .45 NT's use small pistol primers so I throw them out when I find them, but the 9mm NT's can fit a standard small pistol primer - I think.

I've recently experienced problems loading 9mm Federal NT brass with regular SPP's, both Winchester and CCI brands. They just didn't go in consistently or when they did it took alot more effort. I've removed all 9mm NT cases from my stock.

So far as the SPP 45 brass, it gets reloaded along with the LPP brass. I deprime before tumbling and load by headstamps, so they're already sorted when I start a loading session.

They were probably crimped, I've run into the same thing with 9mm NT cases. A few turns with the reamer or chamfer tool should take care of it.

I picked up a bunch of random 40 federal NT's off the range one time.

I loaded a few of them and noticed that the primers were noticeably harder to seat and would flatten out to some degree. They all shot fine, however I threw the rest of the brass out because of that problem.

I'll pay closer attention next time. I'm pretty sure I've loaded Federal NT brass with no issues using Wnichester SPP. I could be wrong tho. I've heard that some NT primer pockets are crimped but so far the only ones I've found are .mil.

I do know loading 9mm of all headstamps is WAY easier when I give the brass a spritz of One Shot case lube. They say it's not necessary with carbide dies but I'm sold on it myself.

I'm loading some 9mm today/tonight so I'll check on that. I know I have a bag or two of Fed NT brass.

FWIW the Fed NT (SPP) .45ACP brass takes the primer like buttah.
