Winchester Model 70

Does anyone have any information about the new winchester model 70's? First hand knowledge anyone? I want to get a ultimate shadow so I'm wondering about the quality of the stock mostly, and the barrel. Is the barrel chrome lined? Is the barrel free floating? What is the stock made from? Who's it made by? How is it bedded? These are the things that keep me up at night haha

yeah, I sell them. well the Featherweight and Supergrade any way. The actions are nice, similar ruger (mauser) bolt design, much smoother action. The new model 70's are much better than the old as far as barrels and accuracy goes. They are made by FNH in South Carolina. The barrels are not chrome lined, the only rifles that have barrels like that are some of the AR types, because people tend to just shoot like fools. Yes the barrels are free floating and the actions are pillar bedded. Have not seen the stock on a Ult Shadow, I'm sure its good as far as synthetic stocks go, not really a nicer rifle for the price, I might go for a Rem 700 XHR, if you can stand the camo stock.

The Ultimate stock is injection molded.... not bad.

Kentucky Smith....how do you like that Featherweight? Have you shot it yet? Which one did you get?

7mm-08. Sighted it in is about it. Great, light trigger. Better fit and finish than my '96 FWT Classic.

Yeah, we have had nothing but good comments on the new Winchesters. But, we have not sold many....
I'm waiting on the new caliber offerings Winchester says they are going to bring out, have my eye on a Super Grade in 7mm-08. But, I'm sure that will change...lol hehehe

Question about the Ultimate Shadow stocks...I've asked before but I'm seeking a 2nd opinion just to be sure.

Are they rubber overmolded like the Hogue stocks???

What I mean is are they rubberized and quiet...or hard plastic and noisy?

I bought an Extreme Weather SS in 30-06 and I'm quite happy with it. I wrote some things about it in another thread maybe a month or so back. Haven't shot it much, just some barrel breakin and sight in. Very nice fit and finish, smooth bolt throw. I got 1.5-2" 3-shot groups with cheap Prvi 165gr soft points, but don't take that as a detractor as 1) it was a quick sight in with two other rifles to work on as well, and 2) I'm no championship shooter. I can shoot 1" or less groups with other rifles with the right ammo though, so I'm not terrible. My only problem is the 13.75" LOP is too long for me, especially in the cold weather, which is mostly what I hunt in with a rifle. I plan to remedy that with a new B&C Medalist stock with a 13" LOP, probably in black with gray webbing.

I have purchased three M70 Fws this year. 243, 270 and 30-06. Hunted several times with the .243 and .270 killing several turkey and three deer. Great rifles! very accurate and nice looking!

An Extreme Weather SS followed me home last night.

I'd like to get a FWT also. Or ten. I'm a little short on cash.

After buying that Model 70, I think I'll just sell any other rifles I own and replace them with Winchesters. (Seriously, though, it's REALLY nice.) Winchester is back in the bolt rifle game, big time.

That's what I was saying the other day...The 'rest' of the players are going to have to suck it up or loose business to, what did you call it, 'Brownchester'...lol hehehehe

This is going to hurt Remington, which is faltering now.

The two I shot at the rep. show were really nice, some of us thought that they(Brownchester) might have brought some 'special' rifles to play that day, but the ones we got in at the shop looked just as good as the prototypes, sans the engraving on the floor plate.

Shot two more, different rifles that were customers....never could get under an inch at 100y but there are many excuses for that, may have not been the rifle entirely.
I wish they had that Savage level of accuracy out of the box!

AB...what caliber did you settle on?

I used to have a Model 70 Super Shadow in .243 WSSM it was very accurate , i had SUB-MOA at 100 yards.

I currently shoot a Remington 700 SPS Buckmaster Edition in .30-06. I've never been too impressed with it, but it was inexpensive and shoots well. Let us know how you like your new 70 after you shoot it. I may just have to pick one up in a couple months.

Idaho is different from many places. I can only get one deer tag per season unless I pay out-of-state prices ($300 per tag last I looked). However, I have a good chance of pulling an antelope tag if I'm willing to drive over a few counties, and there are both elk drawings and over-the-counter elk tags if you don't draw one.

After poring over ballistics tables, I came back to the .30-06, which I already handload, because "general-purpose" makes the most sense.

One tag per hunter per year in Oregon as well. ... Same reasons I chose .30-06.

Nothing wrong with the 30-06...matter of fact, I think your ahead of most people sportin' cult or fetish calibers we see so much of these days.

I got a Featherweight in 243 back in September. Mounted a Weaver Classic V on it and it's one sweet shooter. I'm impressed with the finish on both the wood and the metal. The action is smooth and positive. It's a definite keeper.

I've been knocking around the idea of getting a new Ultimate Shadow in .300 win mag. I have had two Model 70 Black Shadows from the pre-FN days and they both shot under MOA all the way out to 350 yards (the longest range I have access to). My 7mm mag was relatively light to carry, snapped up well for a long bolt gun, and shot 2.5 inch groups at 350 yards with everything I tried in it. If the new Brownchesters are better than that I think I want one, even if I do nothing more than punch long range paper with it. Life is short.

I own 2 of the fn mod 70 both are nice and I think the trigger is really good.The first one I bought was a fwt 300 win mag that shoot really good and the secong is a coyote outback 22-250 that I havent shot yet.
