Woman robber gives new meaning to chat-up line

A woman bank robber in Virginia has found a new way of distracting attention while staging holdups -- chatting on a cell phone.

The woman has held up four branches of Wachovia bank branches in the Washington suburbs of northern Virginia, police said Friday, though it is unclear whether the cell-phone bandit was actually talking to anyone on the other end of the line.

In the most recent robbery, in Ashburn on November 4, surveillance video footage shows the 20-something woman talking on the phone as a teller hands her a pile of cash. She continued talking as she walked out of the bank.

The gabbing bandit had displayed a gun in her purse to the teller, Loudoun County sheriff's spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

In last month's holdups, she used a more unusual weapon: a box with a note taped to it demanding cash. Police would not say exactly what it said.

Video footage taken in Fairfax County, where the woman held up banks on October 12, October 21 and October 22, showed the woman, sunglasses perched atop her long, dark hair, talking on the phone at the teller's counter.

Troxell said it was "strange" that this year Virginia has had three female bank robbers, and each had multiple bank hits.

He said it was the first time he could recall anyone talking on a cell phone while robbing a bank.

I guess that's a good way to blend in.
