Would anyone buy this rifle?

Been trying to figure out what style rifle I would like. I've been looking at a CZ 527 Varmit. One problem is that it doesn't have iron sights. Yes I know the LUX has iron sights but I would like to have something built with peep sights. I shoot better with a peep compared to a v-notch.

Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle is the only non-surplus rifle bolt rifle I know of that has peep sights. It tries to imitate a military style with a flash hider(?) on it. The caliber is a bit to much for me to.

I intend to shoot only at paper and think a .223 with a peep sight and a moderately heavy barrel like the CZ would be Ideal for me.

I have a cz527 in.223 and it has iron sights. Anyway great rifle.

i don't see the point in a varmint bbl if you're not gonna put a scope on it

I'm just guessing that a varmit barrel will take longer to heat up and I would have a scope on it when I felt like changing.

I think a rifle should have iron sights. Scopes will go south on you. Most people just put a scope on a bolt gun. The irons would appeal to a person that likes the Scout Concept. If you want the peep you will have to have it built. I have a scout type rifle I put together some 10 years ago. M77 MKII in 308 with a peep off a WWII M1 Carbine.

I wouldn't buy a 527 Varmint without irons sights. Of course I own two of them now so I really don't need another one!!


Mine are both 204 Rugers and they aren't used to shoot much up close. PD's don't pop up at less than 100 yards very often. My last trip the average shot was around 250 or so and iron sights just wouldn't come into play.





I think if I wanted an iron sighted paper puncher I would go with either an AR or a 700 Remington retrofitted with a good peep sight.

Sadly few bolt action rifles even come with iron sights any more; even Rugers 77/22LR rifles don't come with iron sights any more. Very sad indeed, but another reason I keep an eye out for nice older rifles.

My scope got kocked wayyyy out of alignment of my 870 this hunting season and the barrel didn't have backup irons on it. Long story short I spent the week hunting with my great-great grandpa's lever action Marlin Spruce Gun. fun, but I'm glad I didn't have a 100 yard shot cause I woulda been screwed.

Iron sights are a must for me too!I cannot see the reasoning of not including a built in back-up to a scope.I myself have had problems while hunting and bolt action rifle with irons is a must for me.Some of the "best hunting" shots I have made have been with a remington .243 with factory sights,no scope.

Also the Savage 10 FCM Scout. It's also .308.

The Ruger 77/44 (.44 magnum) seems to have some rudimentary notch sight, unlike the 77/22 which has zilch.

Anyone have any experience getting peep sights put on a decent varmint rifle?

I've look at AR's to their versitility is really impressive. The ones with fold down sights and rails to mount a scope seem to be a good option.

I just like the simplicity of a bolt action rifle.

Maybe there's an after market supplier for peep sights on a bolt gun.

I must be in the minority. Only one of my rifles has iron sights. That is a Weatherby Mark V made in Germany. The others are slick barrels. How many hunters go hunting with the tools necessary to remove a scope? How many hunters would sight their rifles in with iron sights? The only way you could know that the iron sights are ON, is to remove the scope, sight it in, remount the scope and sight it in. More trouble than most hunters are will to go through.
