Would you trade this for that?

For hunting...The Redhawk is a no brainer.

I started with the Redhawk and traded for 629 6" (heard about how smooth the 629 was) came back pissed... as luck would have it the gun store still had my Redhawk and traded me back (14 yrs ago). My Redhawk is a whitetail slayer and more comfortable to shoot. My Smith would not even take my hunting loads, the cylinder was too short!!(nobody told me that!!). If you want a cute, pretty, self defense, smooth, target gun that takes med/hot loads, by all means keep the Smith. If you want a real hunting 44 Mag, that can take the 300 and 320 gr. power loads, the Ruger is top notch!!

The Ruger is more like an old International Scout(big, heavy and indestructible) than a Land Rover. But it won't ever be equal to the Smith.
I can't disagree with anything in your comment, even the uneven value of the guns, but my suggestion was based on his comment of needing a trail gun.........the place where you need heavy and indestructible!:D

Oh yea, I LUV those ol ugly Redhawks, and if they ever made a Smith that was half the gun they were I would luv them too.

The Redhawks aren't particularly ugly IMO. There's a certain elegance to their beef & bulk. Obviously a tank of a gun. (Do they say about tanks "It's built like a Ruger?":D)

Now the SUPER Redhawk.... Those things look absolutely Soviet...:uhoh:

I consider a S&W with a 8 3/8" barrel too long for practical use so I do not own one.

Likewise I have never quite warmed up to the 7 1/2" Redhawk as the barrel is too long for my taste.

However a S&W with a 6" barrel is about ideal for hunting. For me it offers a good compromise between weight and balance.

8 3/8 " M29-2 is about the best sane hunting handgun ever made. Sure a .454 is alot more powerful, but especially in the 8 3/8" length you can control those 300 grain or lighter .44 maggies into a heap of meat. It even can be unobtrusively scoped if you want to.I carried one with a 2x Leupold many a mile over the Sierras 30 years ago. I still have the gun but have taken off the scope and mount, it had at least 6000 rounds thru it and had an S&W tune up in the early 90s just becuz, now 3000 more rounds and it works perfectly .I have sold off Ruger Redhawks long ago but they can be tanks.
