For some reason I want yet another rifle. I have a scoped M1A rifle, I consider it my long range field gun. I have an SLR-95 with red dot, I consider it my short range shtf gun. I have an M1 Garand which I consider my eotwawki living in caves gun. I have the trusty 870 shotty for my short range last ditch defense gun.
But there's just this itch I have for a gun that should cover all these bases, just one, one that no matter what the circumstances will serve all the purposes and I don't do .223.
I had initially been smitten with the 6.8spc cartridge specifically in an XCR platform, but as the ammunition comes in varying designs and power offerings for guns with various chamber dimensions I've pretty much decided that I don't want to get involved in that mess, especially as ammo is not as ubiquitous as 7.62x39 or .308 yet.
So I had considered the XCR in 6.8, then came the Kel-Tec RFB, I was smitten at first a .308 bullpup rifle that gets pretty good reviews. Then there are the AR-10 series of rifles but I am not a fan of the DI gas system. I owned a PTR-91 for a very short while, the ergonomics sucked.
I looked at the FAL and while it was sexy and felt good it also didn't feel quite as balanced as say a Garand or M1A and it felt tinny and nose heavy I even considered the carbine version which I am still considering as a possibility.
As my first love is the M1 Garand rifle and it's cousin the M1A, the M1A scout has always remained on my radar as an all-around do-it-all rifle. The only drawback I can see with it is not being able to add a magnifier to any red dot sight I would put on it. I already have the ammo and the magazines for it and it is essentially the same gun as the M1A standard and scout scope or red dot sight ready.
So I'm leaning farther and farther away from the FAL carbine and more towards the M1A Scout Squad just to have the commonality of weapons and equipment.
But the question is, do I really need it? I think the SLR-95 is adequate out to 300 yards. The scoped M1A is more than adequate out to 300 yards, so why an M1A Scout?

I say you have a "complete" rifle with the standard M1A. If you just want another toy, go with the Scout Squad...like you said, you've got extras that will work on both rifles. Not sure what scope set up you are using, but you might try the Fulton Armory A.R.M.S. mount so you can have the capability to use a magnification or red dot scope on the same rifle.

same boat.. I am somehow getting a hankering for a TC venture in 300 win mag... I have no use for such a thing... doesnt mean I dont want it and wont likely end up with it...

I have an ARMS #18 mount with a Nikon Monarch 6X42 scope on the M1A. I had to use an extended ring for the rear so as to push the scope back far enough for proper eye relief. But the rings have lateral locking lugs on the left and right sides and once they're set, they're set.
I'm looking at getting an Aimpoint H-1 micro-dot sight to replace the CompC3 that sits on my SLR-95 now. I figure I'll put it on the Scout rifle if it ever materializes.
The CompC3 is nice but a bit bulky on the Ultimak tube rail way out there on the front, the micro-dot is at least half the size and can sit back further, closer to the receiver. My only concern is the 4moa dot size of the H-1, but with the AK and 300yd max range I don't think it'll be that big of an issue.

POF makes a gas piston AR10 with 14.5", 16.5" and 20" barrels if you don't care for DGI.

I have the P308-20-MRR SPR variant (shown below). As for your question of "do I really need [an M1A Scout]" given what you already have ... probably not ... but if you can afford one and you enjoy acquiring/shooting firearms then why not. I didn't want to choose just one .308 so I also have a Scout, a DSA FAL PARA and a bolt action (two technically). If only they all used the same magazines!! :( I plan on adding more firearms to my collection but I certainly don't need anything else just like my wife doesn't need another handbag or pair of shoes.

Thats a nice collection and variety. One of the reasons I'm leaning towards the M1A is to keep the same ammo and magazines and parts and pieces.
