Purported al-Qaida Newscast Makes Debut

NEW YORK (AP) - A purported al-Qaida newscast that promises weekly updates made its online debut with a report read by a masked man that included video of Hurricane Katrina - subtitled ``divine punishment'' - and a message from the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq.

The first newscast of the Voice of the Caliphate, appeared on Sept. 21 showing a masked man wearing a black shirt reading the bulletin with an automatic rifle on his right side and a copy of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, on his left side.

The man congratulated Palestinians on Israel's recent withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. The video also aired parts of an audio recently made by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of al-Qaida in Iraq group, in which he declared war on Iraq's Shiite Muslim majority.

When the announcer read a report on Hurricane Katrina, footage from the area appeared with a subtitle in Arabic reading: ``Hurricane Katrina: divine punishment.''

The bulletin by the Voice of the Caliphate, which is run by the Global Islamic Media Front, appeared on a Web site usually used by militant groups to post statements or videos. According to ads on the site, the bulletins will be weekly.

Attempts by The Associated Press to open the Web sites hosting the newscast Tuesday were unsuccessful, indicating they might have been taken down. It is not uncommon for such postings to be taken down by Internet companies.

The accuracy of the video and whether it was indeed the work or al-Qaida could not be independently verified.

Militant groups, including al-Qaida, have in the past aired scores of videos on Web sites but The Voice of the Caliphate will be the first to appear on weekly basis if it continues. In Islam, the caliphate is the religious leadership.

An ad about The Voice of the Caliphate placed on another Islamic Web site showed flames burning logos of Arab and international news organizations such as Al-Arabiya, CNN and Fox News. ``An accurate word in the face of injustice,'' the ad read.

Islamic Web sites commonly carry video of attacks on U.S. troops, whether by car bombs or roadside bombs, but the authenticity can rarely be verified.

Al-Zarqawi's group claims to have a media section that releases videos and statements almost daily. They are signed by the group's spokesman, Abu Maysara al-Iraqi. Videos and audiotapes of bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahri also surface on Islamic Web sites.

Actually, I fully expected this. I am surprised it didn't come sooner. Remember that the Islamic militants are just as extreme in their views as the Japanese were..."divine wind".

No surprise.

I only wonder when we'll see Cindy Sheehan sound bites being used by the terrorists.

More likely it will be sound bytes from members of the admin or military. Bush once referred to the war as a "crusade", and General Looney Toon gave a long and public pronouncement about how his God was bigger than their (Muslim) God.... he also said they worshipped idols.

Ms Shehan will be far down the list of guest speakers.

Warring with God
By James Carroll, 10/21/2003

I KNEW that my God was bigger than his," Lieutenant General William G. Boykin said of his Muslim opponent. "I knew that my God was a real God, and his was an idol." That and other remarks derogatory of Islam caused a stir last week, especially because the general holds a key position in the war on terrorism. Awkward memories surfaced of President Bush's inadvertent use of the term "crusade" to define that war, and fears broke into the open that the war was, despite disclaimers, a religious war after all.

Personally I think we should allow these sites to continue. Let it become public knowledge just how peaceful these adherents to the "religion of peace" are. Let's see just which Americans appear on those sites. Let's shine a little light on these people and let everyone see them for exactly what they are. Brutal, barbaric fanatics who have one goal, "Be like me or die horribly".

anyone have a link?

I wanna open the site and see how long it takes for the authorities to show up at my door ;-)

I am NOT a troll.
Meow.

I didn't see anybody here call you a troll. Maybe over at TFL you were called one, but who honestly cares what they think?

I left that place because of a standing rule of not staying at any forum where the people are so annoying I wouldn't even drink free beer with them. :barf:

Al Franken probably thinks he has died and gone to heaven. His resume is probably in the mail.

I hope comcast subscribes to it, I'd watch it. Voice of the Caliphate would probably be less sensationalistic and biased than CNN. I bet Geraldo would sign on if they'd promise him more airtime.

Is this only a netcast or is there a real radio or tv transmitter hooked up to this too? a little adjustment on a HARM should take that out...
