I've been thinking of slimming the number of different systems that I support.

I'm considering seeking a FTF trade of my Springfield M1A s/n 0869XX, along with a substantial accessory package including such goodies as: USGI: Bipod, bayonet/scabbard, muzzlebrake accessory, extra walnut stock w/cutout, NIW firing pin, Springfield Armory type match rear sight, NM front sight, some tools, manuals, and approximately 12 USGI (one might be Springfield Inc) magazines, and a couple Springfield 5 rounders. (Lawd knows what else is lying around). Have Fulton handguard, a GI vented handguard, and at least one GI solid handguard.

Have Brookfield TiN gas piston installed at the moment, have a spare of the same, and GI gas piston as well. Have Israeli GI scope mount (minty) installed. Have Israeli modified/issued/used sniper stock, nowhere near as homely as Walt's). Have Choate/Springfield Armory folding stock and handguard (black crinkle finish, purchased from our own Briansammo). Have a near mint USGI fiberglass stock around, too.

Rifle has USGI Springfield Armory bolt, and a BEAUTIFUL Saco Lowell barrel, match reamed flash suppressor. GI parts count in total should be good on this 94-95 built rifle. It's in a Boyd's heavy walnut stock that has, unfortunately popped a small (not detached) chip immediately forward of the rear sling swivel. This rifle has had very few rounds fired through it, under 120 rounds, flawlessly. I have a Leupold VXIII Tactical Duplex scope installed, but...I'd probably keep it. Like so many Springfields, it seems to "gap" slightly on most stocks at the receiver heel.

Man, I sure would miss this rifle, but...

Practically speaking, as I have 2 DSA FAL's, I'm thinking that another quality FAL makes more sense for me to support, logistically.

What do y'all think? Should I do it? What might make an equitable trade for this package? (I'd prefer to do it as a package). Should I hang onto her?, it sure would be difficult to ever find another as nice.

That says it right there, keep it. You will regret it if you let it go, maybe for years, maybe forever. You may even end up buying another(been there:eek: ). Save for a while and buy the new FAL if money is the factor. I've thought about selling a couple rifles to fund new ones but I know I will cuss myself for it later, and I don't have a rifle as nice as the one you describe. It sounds as though you have put alot of time and money into it. Unless you suddenly just don't want it anymore, keep it.

My thoughts: you already have 2 great FALs... why get rid of an excellent M1A to get another FAL? Part of the fun of guns is the wonderous variety.:D

My rule is not to sell firearms. The end result was I wish I had that __________ gun. It has happened to me 1 too many times to subject myself to the second thoughts again.

Keep the M1A. The only reason to standardize on FALs would be if you're trying to equip a squad with the same gear. Then you could keep a supply of spare parts for the same type of rifle.

But in terms of firearm diversity and collection purposes, you should have a little variety in your collection. And the M1A is a great rifle. Also takes the same ammo as your FALs, so at least that's not an issue.

I say keep it. But that would be my response to any "should I sell this gun" question. :D

Quoting Gendaito: "Then you could keep a supply of spare parts for the same type of rifle."

And that my friend, sums up my thoughts.

I guess that I'll hang onto the M1A for a while, but...if the right circumstances pop up, it'll be soul searchin' time.

Thanks for the advice. I think that I need to pull her out and shoot her again.

My .02

Don't do it.

Lots of sound advice in this thread already:

If any doubt is in your mind. Don't get rid of what you have.

and most of all:

The only gun I ever sold was my PTR-91, and I did it A. To fund a FAL which I knew I would like and B. Because I knew there was no way I would ever miss the PTR, it was clearly designed to make life difficult (but that's a different topic for a different thread)

Anyway, don't sell the M1A, its an excellent rifle, and you've already got two FALs.

2 FALs + 1 M1A = Good enough, 3 FALs + 1 M1A = Great, 2 FALs - 1 M1A + 1 FAL = Monotonous

I vote no but I don't care much for how many systems I support. I shoot over 21 different calibers and reload for 14 of them.

I buy guns because I am fascinated by the history, art and mechanics of them...not for personal efficiency.

Very few guns I've ever sold I've been happy about 5 years down the road.

Oops, eye skipped and I missread that last post. Glad to know you decided to keep the M1A.
