Has anyone picked up where the Handi Rifle left off? I know Henry makes a couple, Chiappa makes some interesting ones... anyone else? I'd be looking for a 357 mag maybe?

The Henry single shots are scheduled to begin shipping this month, according to their web site. I don't think they had a 357 mag. listed, but they did list 44 mag... I've heard rumors that there may be some more chambering choices available sometime in the future but that will probably depend on sales numbers. Local dealer around here says he's got a couple ordered in .308.. I'm waiting to see how they look and how they feel when I get to personally see one. I'm very interested but not until I know more about them.

There's a company that makes airsoft type rifles that makes a rolling block in 357 and 44 mag. I think the company is Tippman. Browning or Winchester also make a single shot as well though they're falling block rather than break action.

Cva has some cheaper ones and a more expensive one I think called the Apex that is switch barrel capable. To me the contenders and encores are the kings of the break action rifles.

I'm also waiting to see one of the Henry's that are coming out. Looks really nice in pictures with walnut stocks but I don't think the comb height on the stock is going to be optics friendly. If they fix that and they look nice I will buy one.

I think if h&r would have taken Henry's approch and used walnut stocks and nicer finish on the metal they would still be in business, even if that made them cost $150 more. The other thing that always baffled me is if you sent a gun in to h&r back in the day they would do a 3lb trigger job on it for free. If it's free then why in gods name didn't they do that to every rifle in the first place? Are there people that prefer 7 lb gritty garbage triggers?

Years ago (1980's?) didn't Ruger do a run of their #1 rifles in .357 mag? Pretty sure they might have but They would probably be hard to find today and if found I'd bet they're kind of pricey.

Blaser does a rather nice line of single shots ;-) I have my heart set on a K95 Baronesse in 6.5x55. I'm only $17,900 away from it.

I'm not near the snob you are. All I want is a Rigby Highland Stalker in .275 Rigby, which I can get delivered to my door for under $10k. Still way out of reach for me though.

I have had my eye out for a browning B78 in 30-06 or 270 with a pistol grip stock like this. I have seen a few online but never in person.

My next rifle build I want to pick up an early style Thompson Center contender frame. There is a guy here in Minnesota that makes really nice custom rifle and pistol stocks for T/C's so I will have him make me a stock in figured walnut. There is also a company in Minnesota that makes custom contenter and encore barrels so I will get him to make me a 22" blued 30-30 ackley improved barrel for it.

Here is an example of the guys stock on an encore

"...Ruger Number 1s..." No .357. Lipsey's shows a .44 Mag. MSRP: $1,829.00.
Pedersoli makes a bunch of single shot .45-70's. Henry doesn't list a .357, but they do list a .44 Mag.

Eben Brown also makes a pretty nice little falling block about the size of a contender carbine. He has a whole list of cartridges he can custom chamber for, and his own range of 30-30 wildcats called BRM's. I know of him because his shop was a few miles from where I grew up. 10 years ago they were about half that price and I wish I would have bought one then.

Ruger made a #1 in 357 mag years ago. CHP special or some other commemorative nonsense I believe.

I can't figure out who would want one except maybe a collector. 357 isn't exactly what you would call a useful rifle cartridge unless you happen to want one in a state where they are legal for deer. I know, I have one.

You will see some more 357 mag SS rifles being built just for that market. Good 100 yard rifle to replace a shotgun.

357 mag was just my first thought... I'd also consider one in 308, would that be easier to find? I'm also thinking something fairly budget friendly, sadly I think that means a Ruger No.1 is out of the question.

If you want budget friendly your best options are probably CVA or Henry. I don't believe CVA offers a .308 but Henry does/will. Neither offers a .357 Mag.

You can of course still find many many h&r's and NEF's on the used market. I've seen a few recently at gun shops that still have new unsold inventory of them. The new Henry looks really nice to me and I expect about a $350 price tag.
