So I've been offered the previously mentioned mk4 for 450, box paper and decent rings.
I don't NEED another scope, and it's edging my spending limit for a while (and I had a .357 that I wanted).

BUT a buddy of mine has a higher power mk4 that I've used for about 30 seconds and liked. So I'm waffling on buying this one, to go on my 7mag and moving my Athlon to another rifle.

What do you guys think?

From my understanding the mk4 has vx-iii glass, but honestly It seemed better, at least on my buddies one. The major difference we're the 30mm tube and reinforced errector assembly, and the turrets.
Thanks guys
I've honestly considered getting it and if I didn't like it, useing it as trade bait for something else, but that's been alot of work lately.

I've got a MK4 6.5-20X on my .223, it's a solid scope and I've got a Leupold 4.5-14X LR on a .300 Win.

Really depends on your intended use. Both of my "precision" rifles (other has a Razor HD) have greater magnification and for a hunting rifle I don't like that much weight, the tall turrets get hung up and the adjustable objective is one more hing to fiddle with when time may be short. I'm looking at putting together another deer rifle this year and am thinking about a VX-5 or 6, but staying at or below 12X just to avoid the AO.

Yeah, I'd normally jump on any used Leupold at a decent price, but 14X is too big for plinking and too small for longer-range varmints or precision shooting. I stay 9x or under or go 18X minimum or over.

Maybe you said elsewhere, but what's the reticle? I had a Mark 4 for a while that I really liked, but never really got the hang of the mil dot reticle. I like the current crop of MOA based reticles much better. But the turrets on my scope were solid and the glass was great. At this point, I'd find a mil dot reticle a distraction; I'd prefer a straight duplex and use a rangefinder rather than the reticle to range distance.

Personally, I'm done buying things I don't intend to use, unless it's a killer deal. $450 for a Mark 4 that I didn't plan to use wouldn't turn my head.

It's Mildot, and honestly both the turrets and the dots are almost completely useless to me for the hunting rifle I'd be using it on.
I guess I could dial for drop instead of using hold over like I usually do, but Mildot reticles arnt real useful to me....tho I might as well learn, as I just realized I have 3 mil bassed scopes.

I have a hard time passing on a good deal, but I don't have any scopes I really wanna replace right now.

Personal opinion (worth what you paid for it) but I think a Mark 4 with mil dots is wasted on a hunting rifle. I'd rather have a VX-3 or 3i with a basic duplex. Not a bad deal at all for a tactical scope, but if that's not the application, I'd pass. You won't get much more for it if you flip it.

On the other end of the spectrum, I was very happy to spend $248 delivered for a refurbished VX-2 2-7x28 Ultralight ... in gloss no less. I consider that a great deal since I plan to put it on a Ruger No.1.

Well sister I’ve read all of your posts in this thread carefully. My instinct tells me you are interested in the scope mainly because it’s a good deal and you can at worst break even but probably make a profit on it down the road if you move it. It doesn’t sound like it’s a scope you’d purchase if in the market for a new optic. If I’m right then I say buy it and spin it or pass. I could be wrong though.

What’s the story on how it came to be offered to you? Is it a “hey I have this that I would sell” or is it a deal posted on a website or something else.

If I waffle on it, I pass. If I get excited I buy. Very seldom do I regret not buying, even less often is there regret from buying when I do it this way.

That's pretty much sums it up I guess.
I'm not exactly sure why I want it, or even if I really do, just figgured if didn't like it I wouldn't be out a bunch.
Actually thinking thru the usefulness for what I have to mount it on tho, does make it seem like less than ideal choice for anything I'd do with it.

It was passed along from my FFL buddy, there's actually a bunch of us who use him as a b/s/t of sorts. You have something to sell, you just let him know and he'll pass it along to someone who might want it.
He's also the guy I'm doing the 6.5cm twin project with, so he may have thought it would be a good scope for that rifle. I'm happy with the Midas that's on there now tho.

i would get it. i could use a mk4 scope to go with the mk4 base on my 700 lol, if u do trade it off.
If you want it, I can snag it, I'm pretty sure now I don't really WANT it.

i would have to see what i could get together. i do like that swfa on the 700 tho its simple and tuff.

You know someday I’d like to read a thread from you entitled “Finally bought a rifle I want, in a caliber I love, with a fantastic scope, that I’m never going to part out for other people”.

It just sounds more refreshing than “Bought a barreled action to help a stranger fund his dream, gonna modify the stock my buddy didn’t want, now to fabricate a mount for the scope I found under the truck seat”.

I know you’d make either an MOA shooter and have fun, but mercy sakes

That really is a nice pair you got there and I think you’ll actually like this Leupold glass!

Ya know, I'd be tempted to say that gun dosent exist, but it's happened with other things. I know what the basic prerequisites would be even....so perhaps that post will come in the next couple years.

I'm looking forward to getting one mounted and seeing how I like them.

You about as bad as I am @LoonWulf

I’m now saving credit card rewards cash for either a new muzzleloader scope or varmint scope. I’m also debating buying a barrel for my other 223 and making another caliber instead of two 223rem. I will go nuts about it then it starts to disappear!

And your right, I'm keeping one! My buddy decided he liked his vortex more, so I'm gonna see if I can't sell the other to come close to paying for both.
Oh they both came with flip up caps, and Mark 4 rings, as well as an ARD, and sunshade.....figgured I'll sell the accessories too.

Oh they are literally perfect, no scratches or even ring marks (rings are lapped)

So I just read, I e'e'vnever even looked at the mark 4 rings. It's too bad they are both high, otherwise I'd keep one set.

I'm also surprised how light these scopes are for tactical scopes.

i got high leupold rings for my swfa on the 700 there not to bad with the m40 stock, and i shoot it off a bipod prone so there not to high. there is about 3/8 under the bell, but don't have the extra cash to exchange them lol.
