Thinking notWas originally tan.
Thinking not
This is correct. Those holsters in WW2 and before were tan, later versions were black. Many tan ones were dyed black. I found a dyed one in my late FIL's stuff where the inside edge had some of the black dye rubbed off from rubbing against his leg.If it was made in '44, it was tan, and then blacked when they switched over.
We used Fibbing’s leather dye.I see the verdigris on the brass grommets from the tanning chemicals. I have some holsters and knife holders that have that, too. There is a thread in the revolver forum about holsters and how they can damage blued guns if they're left in them too long, that's a good example of what can happen to metal when exposed to the tanning chemicals for a long time.
Gunny, do you recall what chemical was used to dye the tanned holsters black?
Stay safe.
