I know someone that recently got themselves a new CCW, this particular person probably gets a new CCW every couple years. It kind of got me to thinking I’ve had the same primary carry gun for at least 13 years now. Apparently, as I’ve talked to some of my shooting buddies I’m the odd one out to use the same gun for that long.

I’ve had 3-4 different ones I used for bugs and Sunday attire, but my primary weapon, a KAHR PM45 hasn’t changed in a good long time. Personally I’m fine with that but I just got to wondering just how long most people use their CCW before replacing it.

I don’t imagine many of us replace our weapon because we’ve worn it out, so apparently many people replace what has been a perfectly fine gun, which is fine.

I’ve recently been considering swapping to a S&W model 36 or maybe a Detective special. Just because I enjoy the history and have recently been more into revolver shooting.

Anyway, it got me curious as to how long others carry the same gun before replacing or retiring it. I’m also curious as to why people change.

Clothing changes make me change what I carry. Or, I finally come to a point that I'm just done with a gun. Usually something about it that I just don't want to put up with anymore. Call it my concealed carry learning and refining curve.

I've been carrying my current main carry gun for 5 years and I'm thinking of moving to something different sometime in 2022. I just don't trust the elastomer extractor spring in my RM380 to last for a long time. The first elastomer spring made it 4 years, while the current spring is on year 1.

i switched from 45acp to 9mm some years ago. Lots of people did the same as the AWB expired. i imagine other trends might cause others to switch as well, such as reliable micro red dots on pistols, etc. some pretty cool new pistols out there as well, with for example, very low reciprocating mass, and better ergos

My primary sidearm is a Colt Lightweight Commander in .45 ACP. I've carried it over twenty years now; I really cannot remember. Some time in the 1990s, I think. Depending on my mood and such I sometimes carry a S&W 2nd Model Hand Ejector 44 Special. Occasionally a S&W Model 27 (3.5 inch). In the summer I go all the way to a S&W Model 36 (2 inch). I 'rotate' them but not in any fixed time period or order. I see no need to replace any of them.

I switched my primary from Revolver to Pistol with a spare mag about 6 years ago, I did it for ease of reload.

But there are times I still want to and grab a revolver. Something about the way they feel on the hip or in the hand, that keeps pulling me back. Maybe it is the simplicity, pull the trigger, they go bang, at least all of mine do, or maybe it is a reminder of times when I didn't have to worry if 5 or 6 might not be enough.

Hi...
Been carrying the same Springfield Armory 1911 in .45ACP since at least the mid 80s.
Sometimes replace it with a Colt Combat Commander in the same caliber that I have had for maybe 20 years.

Have other guns I could carry but I have supreme confidence in these two pistols and my ability to use them.

I have several different carry guns. Depends on where I’m going and what clothes I’m wearing as to which one gets to ride with me. I haven’t retired any in the 15 years I’ve been carrying.

I voted but it’s not that simple because I don’t always carry the same gun.

My oldest carry gun (Kahr P9) is my ‘normal’ gun that I started carrying in 2002, I think. 5-6 years ago I decided to carry a larger and higher capacity gun in the colder seasons so I went thru an audition period of about six months and finally settled on the CZ P07 and bought a matched pair in 9mm and 40. My office gun (pocket carry) was some variety of J frame S&W for many years but became a Kahr PM9 about six years ago.

I went through several over the last 10 or 12 years. I think that I have carried a Keltec 40, LCP, LC380, LC9, Bodyguard, P238 Sig, P290 and have carried a Glock 42 for the last 3 years. Of course I bought the 42 before the 43 came out. I shoot it well and it is easy to conceal, but I may have to try a Sig P365 though.

I may carry my new 1911 in a shoulder holster when it gets coat weather. We'll see.

I changed from an XD-45 when I actually learned how to shoot a 1911 about 3 years ago. The XD, in my opinion, is a fine platform for SD. And I would carry one tomorrow. But barring a catastrophic failure of my 1911, I don’t ever plan on changing. If I can’t handle the situation with my 1911 and extra mag, then it’s my fault for having allowed myself to be put in such a bad situation.

I only change if I find something better than my current EDC. I recently switched from my long time S&W M&P 9 Compact to a Sig P365XL. I switched because it was smaller, lighter, easier to carry, and more accurate....but not because it was “time” to switch.

I have a couple of guns that make it into the carry rotation...but my “regular” gun doesn’t change very often.

I have been carrying my P938 for 5 years. The Sig 365 and Springfield Hellcat might be a better option for CCW but the P938 is like a old friend. Will not be replaced anytime soon.

I opted for 3 to 5 years. Usually I change because I find a better option. I only have one carry pistol among other pistols I own. I recently changed from a Walther PPS M2 to a Ruger Security 9 compact. Why?
The Sec9c in nearly identical in dimensions to the Walther, but it accept a 15 round double stack magazine compared to the highest capacity PPS M2 magazine at 8 rounds. I trust Walthers and Rugers the same. But gettingb7 more rounds in the same size package was appealing. So I went Ruger Security 9 compact with two 15 round mags v

I switched from a Springfield V10 a few years ago to the Sig 1911 Ultra Compact I carry now. The V10 was just fine, but the ported barrel and slide concerned me in terms of using it for defense in low light. It shot well but after shooting it at dusk one evening I realized it wasn't a good option. The Sig is the same size, same capacity, etc...so it wasn't a big learning curve. I don't intend to switch up anytime soon unless some ailment requires down sizing calibers.

Have carried a S&W M&P Shield for a few years. Recently replaced it with a SIG Sauer P365 as my primary. Still carry a Ruger LCP occasionally as well.

WOW! Now THAT'S a different question!

I don't have a timeline for replacement of my CCW. I'll carry it until I decide I'd rather carry something else or until I have problems with it and need to replace it.

Never thought about it. Hard for me to say. I have a handful of pistols that I rotate carrying (yeah, I'm that guy). I'm not really going to different models, simply up-dated versions of what I've habitually carried for the past forty years -- 1911s and SIG P-228s/P-229s. Probably go in 3 to 5 year cycle, varying back and forth between my favorite .45 and 9mm pistols.

Although, last year I picked up some SIG P-365s (both the standard and XL versions) and have been occasionally carrying them. And when I really feel frisky, I carry a snub-nose .357 revolver...

Carried a Smith 642 for thirty years in hot weather. Switched to a Ruger LCR a few years back for the excellent trigger and better sights. A Charter Arms Bulldog in winter.
