We are near the end of waiting for ammo

I have been monitoring Ammo Seek over the last few months and checked today. The calibers that I was interested in (.45 Colt, .454 Casull, .460SW, and 7mm RemMag) are all in stock and at various places with the exception of .460SW which is only at LAX. That said, the prices are higher and no where close to end of 2019 prices. That said, it is a good sign. I suspect that availability will increase and will be followed by some “normalization” in price. I would be impressed if we see shelves stocked with various makes and calibers within the next year. While I hope I’m wrong, I doubt that we will see any box of ammo selling for within $2 of its end of 2019 prices unless Republican take control of the presidency, senate, and congress in 2024.
 
I kinda sorta understand why a lot of pistol ammo and some rifle ammo is hard to find / out of stock. Even .22LR and 00 and buckshot shotshells. Lots of new gun owners buying ammo, and certainly some panic buying.

But why is #7 and #8 birdshot ammo not on store shelves? There can't be that many new bird and bunny hunters, nor droves of new skeet shooters. I've been thinking about starting to shoot skeet and sporting clays again, but am amazed that I don't see shotshells on store shelves. I have a reasonable stockpile from several years ago, but I don't want to use up what I have if I can't get more.
 
I think that lacking anything good for SD the new shotgun owners are buying up anything they can. Plus it has the appeal of being cheaper to buy, At least before when it was still on the shelves anyway.
 
Okay I live 20 minutes away from Graf's Reloading supply and 60 minutes from MidwayUSA. I am also with an hour drive of a Cabela's, 2 Bass Pro Shops, and at least 2 Academy Sports, plus all of the other smaller shops. I still don't see ammo on the shelves at any fo the mentions stores (Midway doesn't have a store front). Oh and I forgot about the 15+ Walmart stores within an hour drive that never have any ammo on the shelves either.

I find it hard to believe that all of the ammunition manufacturers are producing at full capacity or that the whole sellers are NOT hoarding the ammo. I am just not seeing any on shelves. And forget about finding any type of primers around here. I can get some powder and a limited supply of bullets at Graf's.
 
I expect the supply to build slowly, accompanied by prices that reflect demand and ever increasing costs of production. Dealers long ago learned that you can't buy loyalty, so will pass along the increased prices they must pay. This should ease demand from old timers and let the new guys and gals pay what it is worth to them. If the stars align, supply will build to the extent that prices will start to resemble those of 2019, but my crystal ball works no better than others and suppliers will remember the pressure caused by oversupply in the recent past. There is no rational basis to believe that someone can click their heels together and be back in Kansas at the end of the movie :D
 
Ammo prices are still quite high from what I am seeing. Was in my LGS the other day and they were selling no name hollowpoints in plastic bags. Typical SD calibers like 9mm and 380. Price was $3 per round. I had planned on picking up a 380 handgun for the Mrs, but seeing those prices I grabbed something for her that I had ammo for instead.

One of my LGS was selling baggies of 20 rounds of bulk Winchester 5.56 for $15 a bag which was a pretty damn good price, especially considering it was the green-tipped bullets that shot exceedingly well out of my Henry Long Ranger. So I think it's still pretty much hit and miss YMMV very much locally dependent. But ... getting better!!

If you are speaking a return to normal that would be more likely November of 2022

What I am referring to is that we will see more and more ammo each week. Already seeing one or two pallets each week. That should increase May thru the Fall. But will not return to 2019 levels until 2022

But it does mean will we see less bare shelves.
 
I really hope we are nearing the end of the ammo and reloading components shortage but I will believe it when I see it on the shelves at my local shops.
 
You mean to tell me the bald guy from Vista Outdoors who made those videos was lying to us, and they had shut down production? Forget about the reason, taxes or whatever, he certainly didn't mention anything of that nature and implied the total opposite.
 
They get a shipment at my local Academy sports every Monday & it's gone within an hour even at these high prices.

Production had slowed to as low as 10% at times following bankrupcy in 2020 and ramping up as quickly as possible after the purchase in October. The reasons for the slowdown were cash on delivery terms by suppliers, layoffs of employees due to cash shortage, and Covid. Tax was never an issue, nor was any intentional slowdown or diversion, as no money can be made for investors until product is sold. You can believe the conspiracy theories if you want, but none of them hold up under scrutiny.

Last September the Gun Dept. Manager told me in person that he always sees the same 20-25 "Redistributors" at Opening time, every Monday and Wednesday.
 
Remington opened their factory back up. I'm already seeing (at Midway) Remington ammo and primers (shotgun) that I haven't seen for a looong time. I'd been looking for 12 guage birdshot and Midway has some target grade 12 guage shells. Pricey, but it's there.

I hope that with Remington back in the game it might take up considerable slack.

Sorry, I missed that. Vanderbrink is heading both operations for Vista Outdoors, and I had seen his videos regarding Remington. I see no attribution or links for the claim regarding Federal, but it would be ludicrous for them to back off when they could sell every case of ammo 12 times over. Paying taxes means you are making money. Corporate tax rates are not graduated that way.
 
I doubt the Federal rep knew what he was talking about. That wouldn't make any sort of business sense. The common calibers are becoming more available and slightly cheaper but still high. I think it will be a long time before we see the more obscure ones on the shelf.
 
If everyone quit buying ammo for 1 month the shelves would be full and the shortage would be over for about 2 days.
 
In the trading post section, Optics Planet posted pics of litteral "tons" of Winchester M193 @ $700/1K. There was probably 6 pallets in the picture. That's a good sign for me. My LGS has been getting a few cases here and there and M855A1 Winchester 200rd packs for $0.70 rd. Also a good sign I guess. He also had a sealed case of Tula 5.45×39 for $525.

On the other hand, another gun shop not too far away has 1K rd cases of 5.56 for $800/500rd case but they have always been scalpers even during the Trump slump.

I don't know that the OP was trying to be misleading or was making up a bunch of bullarky, I think maybe he just heard a lil something, somewhere, had no reason to doubt it and just wanted to pass along what he saw as positive news Bulls* or not..... we aren't all so adept at wading through the nonsense....

Not worried about ammo. I don't by ammo. I've always rolled my own. I just need components. Primer and bullet shortage have my concerns. Have lots of brass and powder.
