.41 Mag Association

Shot some test loads yesterday using the Bisley conversion 6 1/2 Flat Top. The new bullet was from Penn Bullets and with their latest coating. I am no longer getting a barrel full of coating to clean out and no leading. The load was pretty much full house IMR 4227 and Penn's 210 gr TCBTB coated. IMR 4227 is easy for me to shoot, and there is load data for lead using it. While providing an easier time with recoil, the Bisley grip requires me to use a really firm grip to stay on target.

I have the 6" S&W barrel. I understand that I should be able to get a 4" to 4-1/4" barrel out of it on the Ruger single action. That's just fine with me. I gravitate toward shorter barrels on handguns.

Count me in. Was just gifted a M57 6” barrel. Shot it at the range and really liked it. It seemed to me to be the perfect combination between my .44 magnums and my .357’s. Got 500 new Starline cases, borrowed a couple of moulds, got some dies and a .410 bullet sizer. Couple more moulds on the way. Loaded up a batch of Unique 8 gr. plinkers and going to put together some HS7 loads tomorrow and head on over to put some lead down range. Sure costs a lot to change calibers!

You might find recoil worse with heavy loads of medium burn rate powders, Unique in particular, versus magnum powders. I shoot either a cowboy load of Trailboss or 19 grains of IMR4227, either with 210 lead. The XTP load is H110/W296, which I always enjoy shooting but only a few cylinders.
 
If you want a great SD bullet, get the Barnes all copper HPs or most any of the companies who load that bullet.

I carry the Federal rendition and it runs in the 1300s with much less recoil than the 210s...

I found this thread last night and read through the whole thing. I have a s&w 657 6” that I bought new after reading after action reports on actual police envolved shooting. Back then I could purchase factory loads but I started reloading. I purchased a Marlin FG an have used both to hunt for whitetails. I have had great success with both. I an a fan of Hornady xtps. I also have loaded Missouri bullet. Both are accurate and will do their job on a whitetail. I am a fan of H110 and 2400.
Great caliber and very accurate and deadly on what ever it is used for.

"Welcome to the Association". Nice couple of 41s, the Marlin is the one I've been looking for at a decent price, but not very hopeful!
 
Took the Model 58 with me to NV 2 weeks ago. I've never really sat down and worked with the 58 with different loads to see the accuracy potential; to that end, I loaded up 3 different loads for the 58... my standard 9.0grn Unique under a 215grn cast (LaserCast this time...) bullet, a slightly downloaded 8.5grn Unique load, and some of my IMR4227 loads I have for the 1894. All shot pretty well, but the 8.5grn Unique load was the clear winner... and was certainly more fun to shoot.

6 rounds, offhand, at 25'. I was shooting in the early morning, so the sun gave me fits with the very poor, all black, fixed sights of the 58. The white target helped, but it's likely I could have done better in better light.

NICE shooting Charlie!!

8.5 of Unique should run about 1020 fps...9.0 is 1100 from my 4" Smiths...10.0 1180.

My all time favorite load is 8.0 as it duplicates the original POLICE LOAD at 950 fps.

I put some yellow or light green paint on the front blade...old eyes need it...

I'm doing really well with the 8.0 gr. Unique load and 210 gr. RCBS mould rnfp plainbase powder coated .410" sized out of a M57 6". Am curious on other accurate loadings not breaking the sound barrier. I also have a similar mould of 220 gr. made by Arsenal moulds.

I've been experimenting with other bullet weights in the .41... the 220grn and 240grn mostly. I don't cast, so I have to buy mine from Montana and other places, so they can get expensive compared to the run of the mill 215grn generic cast SWC's. I've decided to save the heavier bullets for the Marlin 1894, where the weight would have an advantage. I don't really shoot the big boomers in the pistols much, anymore, so more bullet weight doesn't make a lot of sense there. Actually, hands down, the most accurate bullet I've ever shot out of the Marlin is the Cast Performance 250grn FN/GC bullet over W296.

Thanks Charlie for that info. I used to be a big fan of magnum everything loads but now that the years are beginning to creep up on me, I’m beginning to see why there are such things as lighter loads.
 
8.5grn Unique gives me right at 1000fps out of the 4" pistols... 9.0grn only adds another 25fps, but the recoil is definitely more. I was trying the IMR4227 to see if the recoil impulse was different... Unique can pound your hand as you near max data... but a) IMR4227 requires twice as much powder, b) it doesn't burn as clean as Unique unless you have good case fill, and c) the accuracy wasn't what the Unique load was. Easy choice.

a) I think the amount of powder is not an issue
b) IMR4227 is supposed to be filling the case and burns well like that
c) try the full load of IMR4227 for accuracy. It is really not that harsh when a slow burner.

I was using 8.0 gr of Power Pistol with the 210 gr lead and found it too harsh in my 41 Special GP100 with the shorter brass. I am shooting it up in my magnum Blackhawk for target. Another load that was painful to shoot in the 41 Special but easy going in the 6 1/2" magnum was 8.6 of BE-86. I am guessing that moving those loads to magnum brass length would make a shooter-friendly target load and be easily subsonic.

I use Unique too but kept scaling back on the load for being too harsh and now have 6.0 gr with 210 bullets in 41 Special brass ready to test.

So, a full load of IMR4227 is the ticket rather than 8.0 gr. Unique for accuracy and less felt recoil?
