Yep, Another .22lr Rifle Recommendation Thread

I have really been enjoying shooting my Ruger 10/22 before and after putting it in the Magpul X-22 Hunter stock. Shooting .22s just seems to be more fun for me anymore...less recoil, lower cost, etc.
I don't have any issues with continuing to enjoy the 10/22 but for grins and giggles I'll throw out this "what if".
I've kind of got to a point where I really don't care if I own or shoot .45acp anymore. What I have in 9mm is just fine for me, so, I have been thinking about selling the .45acp stuff (4500 rounds, a Colt Combat Commander and a Glock 30). If I did that then I could afford to buy a nice .22lr setup. I'm not into competition shooting, so, the rifle would be just for shooting off of a bench for fun.
So, "what if" I decided to sell my .45acp stuff and put the money towards a nice .22lr rifle to shoot off of a bench, what direction would you go based on your experiences with some nicer rifles? Kidd Supergrade? Vudoo rifle of some flavor? A Volquartsen perhaps? Something else completely different than these?
 
I wouldn't mind having a couple different .22lr rifles, I've seen some on here that have given me some inspiration to try something else but I've always been a 10/22 guy. I had 4 at one point I think so I'll just throw this out there, you could always get another 10/22 and set it up a lil differently. Like I had one with hogue stock and heavy target barrel w/ variable power scope, the other with a fixed 4x scope and the other two had iron sights with different stock setups. Same rifle, but different configurations kept things a lil more interesting. Kind of like my AR situation now.

But, if your 10/22 situation is covered, may e something like the Ruger American RF or Ruger Precision RF could be fun.
 
I have 3 Ruger 10/22's. Two of them have been modified somewhat, the other is one of the now discontinued Light Varmint Target rifles. I had a CZ, bolt gun, but sold it after picking up one of the Tikka T1x rifles in 22. These sell for around $500 street price. They have a threaded heavier than standard weight barrel to help steady the rifle, but aren't too heavy to carry.

Six of 8 shots on target at 250 yards. The bigger mark was an earlier shot with my 223. I'm out of scope adjustment here and fighting some wind. I'm actually putting the crosshairs on the 4th link of the chain on the left to get the hits.

.22 rimfire is my all time favorite so I can empathize. While I would love a stable of classic thoroughbreds mine are far more pedestrian in nature. It’s kept me entertained without sacrificing other firearms to feed my habit, thus no remorse down the road.

If you’re looking for a more accurate rifle and don’t mind the basic appearance, I’d recommend a few to look at as prospects. Savage Mark series, Marlin XT, or as previously suggested, a used Mossberg. While none of these will likely outshine a classic target rifle, they can punch well above their weight for what you pay and more importantly will allow you to keep those pistols in your safe if ever you should rekindle an interest.
 
I'm a big fan of the CZ rimfires. Plus with one of those you can shoot in the monthly casual CZ contests over at Rimfirecentral. I have CZ 452 Super Match and a 457 Varmint with a Clearridge scope.

I have also heard good things about the Tika T1x rifle.

Well, if you have 10/22 i would recommend to go into something completly diffrent - Beretta/Umarex ARX160, AK in .22LR (Chiappa and GSG makes one), ISSC MK22, MP5 (GSG i think) or CSA vz. 61 in .22LR.
Taurus TX22, Beretta M9-22, Beretta M71, some LR revolvers... Or Alfa Proj makes revolvers carabines

I did some research about ARX 160 and Taurus TX22, both looks like excelent guns, ISSC Mk22 had some rocky starts, but looks ok now. CSA vz. 61 in 22Lr is mostly unknown

I have Hammerli Tac R1 in 22Lr, which si solid too, just cleaning is a bitch
 
Check out Volquartsen. Not cheap but very nice. They take the 10/22:and improve on it. I have one of their pistols a remake of the Mk iii and it very accurate and a pleasure to shoot.
 
For a few years I had a very heavy target 22. Sold it because it was just too heavy to do much with but punch tiny groups. It got boring. When Tikka came out with the T1X, I got one. It’s a great shooting rifle (1MOA guarantee), and it’ll do that with regular ammo.
 
I've pretty much switched to all 22lr. My favorite is my bull barrel custom 10/22,....but recently I got a Thompson T/CR22, and Friday, put a Volquartsen trigger pack in it and made it even better.

And as someone pointed out above, Henry rifles are also a great way to spend time at the range. Well made, and smooth as butter levers.

I thought about trying a T/CR22 as a cheaper option but they don't seem to be available. I'm assuming it's because S&W is trying to sell Thompson.

Like you I already have 10/22 Collector and T/CR22 that I like but this thread actually got me looking hard at buying a better cheap bulk 22LR testing platform.

CZ 457 MTR and Tikka T1X look like good options after checking out various forum threads but I came across this -

So after chewing on what I have read so far, I am going to do one more tweak of my factory stock 10/22 before I consider another rifle purchase (I free floated the barrel and better secured the rear of receiver and I already have couple of tweaks I want to test with T/CR22).

If I get significant group size reduction with the final tweak of 10/22, I will consider doing a light trigger job.

I've not heard about that. I think I had seen some on gunbroker, fyi. They are a "cheaper option", but I think they might be a bit better quality than Ruger.

This line of question just came up in another similar thread. I guess an answer really depends on how deep your pockets are in this quest. Consider a lightly used with names like Winchester Model 52 or lower cost 75. I have an Anschutz Savage on extended loan from my sister which is a dream to shoot. Moving down in cost I like my CZ 452LH which was about a $500 rifle. You can find match rifles north of $5K and many really nice lightly used guns around $1K. I have been eying several Winchester 52 guns in my local shop. Saw an early Win 52 with the extended forearm (maybe 1929 vintage) going for $1200 and another 52 with Unertle rings and scope going for $1000. Also a nice Winchester 75 at $799. These were at Northfield Gun, Northfield, Ohio. I hear another straight shooter gun in demand is a Kimber Government trainer.

If you want to off some of your 45 stuff do it here. I may see something I simply must have. :)

Figure out your budget and move on it. :)
